View Full Version : If--IF--Durant leads OKC to the title this year

sportjames23

Is he without a doubt the best player in the game? The MVP last year was great and all, but trolling Lebron stans aside, doesn't mean you're the best player in the game. But would being The Man on a title team give Durant status as the best player in the NBA no ifs, ands or buts?

Lol, he was quite clearly the best player last season and that isn't going to change going into next season.

Doing what he did all season long in the West is proof of that.

Not even the best player on his team

If he leads them to a title as the clear cut alpha dog, then even I will give him his best player in the game props. However, it is hard for me to see that happening. Westbrook thoroughly outplayed him in this last playoffs, which tells me that when the pressure is on Durant goes into beta mode. I can't remember another league MVP who wasn't even the best player on their team once the real season started.

As long as that achilles injury has indeed forced Kobe to decline, I don't see why Durant wouldn't take the reigns at that point. If Kobe's still the same as when he left? No.

Neither can I. Durant just needs to turn up the dial on his alpha settings.

While I agree that the refs do inflate his stats, he had a better regular season than Lebron last year. But you don't take the title of best player in the game just because you were the best player in January and February. From his shitting the bed in the clutch against the Spurs last year, to his 4 straight choke jobs against Memphis in the 2013 playoffs, Durant still has A LOT to prove.

J Shuttlesworth
08-04-2014, 02:42 AM
It depends on how he plays. Last playoffs, Westbrook was a bigger difference maker

dubeta
08-04-2014, 02:45 AM
On a sidenote I dont think I've ever seen a 'superstar' carried all the way to the conference finals before

Durant choked for 3 straight rounds, which is unprecedented, reggie jackson saved his ass from the 7th seed Grizzles :oldlol:

then after cp3 was holding him in check, westbrook had to carry him again in the 2nd round

And after letting OKC down with 2 straight chokes in the first 2 games against spurs, ibaka and westbrook couldnt carry him, the damage was already done

the fact that durant made it to game 6 of WCF while choking the entire playoffs show how stacked his team really is

He was the best player in the league last year leading up until now. Winning the title or not next season doesn't change that.

Durant — referred to by Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich as “arguably the best player on the planet” — erupted in the second half to score 22 of his 27 points

It depends on his overall play as compared to LeBron. Durant winning a ring on the most stacked or at least second most stacked team while LeBron is on a team that won 33 games last year proves nothing inherently about Durant. If he has a better year, continues it in the playoffs and wins a ring then it would be him but simply winning a ring would not make him a better player than Durant. If LeBron was on OKC how many rings would they have by now?

He was easily the best player in the regular season and he deserved the MVP. But the eye test, he let me down come playoff time, which is when I sat down and watched every OKC game. Let's hope he can man up come playoff time, I wanna see my boy Westbrook get a ring sometime in his career :pimp:

not like durant doesn't have the team do win either. unless lebron takes a huge step back, the only way KD is going to become better than lebron IS winning. he didnt shoot the ball well last postseason, which you could argue caused OKC some games.

No, he didn't. But I love how this has become a prevailing narrative for LeBron stans/KD haters. Outplayed him, sure, that's debatable. But now it's "thoroughly" outplayed Durant? No.

KG215
08-04-2014, 05:27 PM
If LeBron was on OKC how many rings would they have by now?
All other scenarios the same? One, maybe two. He's still not getting past the Spurs this year, especially if Ibaka is out two games. Given how awful everyone but Durant and Westbrook were in the 2012 Finals, while seemingly every Heat player was on fire, means LeBron winning that ring is even debatable. He's still not getting past the Mavericks in 2011, either. And he sure as hell isn't getting through the West in 2013 if Westbrook is hurt. I think his best chance in OKC, if Durant is in Miami, is 2o12, but even that one is debatable.

Odds are, simply because LeBron is so great, he finds a way to win one, but let's not sit here and act like he'd have 3-5 rings already if he was playing in OKC. He's not getting a cakewalk to the Finals every year if that's the case and, instead, he's getting more physically worn down from playing grueling, tight 6-7 game series.

durant was already the best player in the NBA last year. 30/7/5 on .503/.391/.873. Tops in the league in Per, Usg%, offensive win share, win share, and even win share/48. Led the playoffs in points scored despite not even playing in the finals.
