It's no secret that Kobe jacked off to all of Jordan's moves.

Props to Kobe... of all the kids who grew up and wanted to "be like Mike"... he did it better than anyone.

I noticed that on pretty much every turnaround jumper, Jordan was able to create more space than Kobe. I can't tell exactly why, because a lot of them seem to be just as quick, and Kobe seemed to jump just as high. Was Jordan just selling the fakes better?

Your observation is on point. MJ is more consistent at getting separation.

Even when MJ was a Wiz.

Why?

Stronger, better balance, footwork etc

I honestly never thought there was anything wrong with that. No moves from post 80s or so are original.

Just so happens MJ is the person for Kobe to pick up moves from-- similar build and height. MJ used the most efficient moves for his body type-- naturally they would be Kobe's.

And mannerisms? Like the first pump? Nothing wrong with that. You look up to someone growing up and you take after them.

MJ picked up the tongue thing from his dad.

And hell, he learned his on court / off court demeanour from Dr. J. (he explicitly admitted it too)

2001 Western Conference Semifinals versus Kings: 4 gms, 43.3 mpg, 35.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.25 spg, .473 fg%. Lakers win 4-0.

On the way to an all-time NBA-best 15-1 postseason record, the Lakers swept Portland in the first round before taking on a Kings team that had won a (then) team-record 55 games during the regular season (only one less than Los Angeles). After taking a backseat to Shaq during the first two games as L.A. protected their home court (behind a prime Diesel's 44-21 and 43-20 showings), Bryant played the lead in Sacramento. He scored 36 in Game 3 as L.A. took a commanding 3-0 series lead, and then (in what Simmons last year called Bryant's best single playoff game performance) went off for 48 points and 16 rebounds in leading L.A. to their second consecutive sweep. The game was highlighted by Bryant's sick crossover on Doug Christie before serving up a nasty facial on Vlade Divac.

I think everyone can knowledge that Kobe mimicked moves from Jordan.

However close, MJ clearly was able to get more separation between himself and his defender, much more than Kobe. Yeah Jordan was better at what he did, no shit.

Then again, replicating what Jordan did wouldn't be possible for everyone, even if one poured all his life into doing so.

You got to applaud Kobe for his ethics and hardwork, the years he put into polishing that footwork and go to moves.

Kobe's not complete, he's not perfect. But Kobe will be the closest thing to MJ you will ever get to see while you live.

Because he was smart enough to know to use variety in his game. And he used whatever was most effective. When MJ went off, he used everything: long-range and mid-range jumpers, drives/penetration, posting up. He didn't settle for just jumpers.

To be fair, he's stronger and can jump higher than Kobe, so driving is easier. Plus those ridiculously massive hands that allow him to weave the ball over (and most importantly, AROUND) multiple defenders.

Watch this one. I haven't counted, but a large chunk of his points were through layups (I think PJ told him to focus more on drives this game). It's ridiculous how 'casually' he gets above and around defenders-- and he starts from half-court. He doesn't accelerate from far. :facepalm

You can only do so much in basketball before movements are recycled. Everybody copies everybody.

Heck, Wiz MJ was swagger jackin' 3peat Kobe, since Kob was the best perimeter player at the time and MJ had to imitate what worked at the time.

Is this some sort of viral video? Almost 800,000 views in one day.

You can only do so much in basketball before movements are recycled. Everybody copies everybody.

Well, lets say there are 3,000 unique basketball moves, and player A has 81, and then player B has 78 of those 81. It's going to look more severe, more of a complete model off than if those 78 randomly came from 3,000 moves. So the more basketball moves there are in basketball, the worse it's going to look the player B is his game is almost a carbon copy of player A.

Personally I don't care that Kobe copied his game after Michael, and neither should his stans. I don't even care that he copied his mannerisms. If it's what helps a person reach a certain level, then it's better than not being an NBA Super Star and sitting at home watching.

I always say that 99.9% of people copy each other, simply trying to fit in. The only difference is that Kobe obsessively imitated the GOAT, while a 19 year old is imitating his other dumb 19 year old immature friends, trying to fit in.

In a basketball scenario, all I see the teen do when they get the ball is try to do the same dribbling move, over and over, and going, "Ooohh." They're all imitating their own little personal culture. At least a Kobe would be using that time to copy a Jordan fadeaway.

Kobe's body control is simply amazing, probably the most fluid and flexible player ever.
Playing soccer really does wonders for your footwork and control, Nash, Hakeem, Kobe are a joy to watch from that aspect
