Had a great rookie season but then hit the dog house and was never the same again.

The only way Mayo would have been a top 5 player is if he traded talents with Westbrook.:crazysam:

he had a better rookie year than Westbrook, his coach just hated him and wanted to play Big men and try to make Gay into his Superstar.

Tyreke Evans is another perfect example of peaking in his rookie year.
It's strange, they both have talent, probably didn't work enough or pissed somebody off

coaches just hated them and stunned their growth. Evans would be a top 10 player for sure in the right situation.

Dude is a fat ****, squandered damn near every opportunity he's had in the NBA, and he's had plenty.

I was surprised to see him fall off that bad after he had a really good rookie year. I actually thought he was going to be good with the Bucks but I guess I was wrong :confusedshrug:

gained some weight but probably due to injury. My point still remains.

Even if he didn't get injured, he still wouldn't be a top 5 player today

I'm saying that you can't question his work ethic based on his minor weight gain last season. My point remains that he would be top 5 if his coach didn't hate him after his rookie year.

he could have had a shot at top 5 shooting guard though with how weak the position has been lately.

OJ Mayo was so beast his rookie year, he has more offensive moves than James Harden still.

Short answer: No way

Long answer: He had a nice rookie year, which many players had depending on circumstances. This alone does not have to translate to anything.

I am not a Grizz insider, so I don't really know why he pissed off Hollins that much or vice versa, but if he just stayed patient and listened to his coach he would have played more.

Then, he had a big chance in Dallas (even though lockout season and Dirk missing first). I actually can tell a lot about this time. He started okay, but it was more of a fluke than anything.

This guy has no handles, doesn't know how to pass (turnover machine), isn't particularly athletic, has no clue about how to play pick and roll and is basically a low efficient chucker (and, when given the choice, chucks from three rather than attacking basket). That's about it. Even under Carlisle he showed no improvement whatsoever.

Then went to Milwaukee and showed no heart, got fat etc. As a normal human, one could understand that in a situation like Milwaukee, motivation might get lost, but if you are top player material, you always have the desire to win and at least try to lift teammates up. Also, you play for your own future cheque. He does not even try this.

To even be consideres top 10 or anything, you have to have two things.

Great base skill and/or athleticism and insane work ethik.

Mayo clearly has neither of both.

In my opinion, even if he played more minutes in his early years, he would not even be top 20 (or worse, don't want do hang up on numbers)
