From what I have personally witnessed, it was the the 80s. KAJ, Moses, Artis, Lanier, Ewing, Olajuwan, Sampson, Sikma,Parish.. Maybe others I forgot.

90s and 2000s is not close.

Now, if you want to say the best centers on the very top, I didn't see it, but many will say it was the 60s with Wilt and Russell and Thrumond.

You can't go wrong with Wilt and Russel.

I'd say the 80s, seemed to have the most consistent grouping of centers who would be above average in todays league. Other eras have some great stand out stars but not as many at a consistently good standard.

60's - 00's.

By time:

60's - 70's
Bill Russell
Wilt Chamberlalin
Nate Thurmond

70's - 80's
Kareem Abdul Jabbar
Moses Malone

80's - 90's
Patrick Ewing
Hakeem Olajuwon
David Robinson

90's - 00's
Shaquille O'Neal
Yao Ming (ish)

00's - 10's
Dwight-ish

It's actually a bit depressing to see so little great big men nowadays. But gotta keep in mind things change over time-- the game has evolved to enable perimeter players.

But overall in terms of quality + quantity, it would have to be 80's - 90's.

If you include Gilmore in the ABA...how about this list from the early to mid-70's...

Unseld, Hayes, Cowens, Reed, Bellamy, Lanier, McAdoo, Thurmond, Gilmore, Kareem, and Wilt.

Heh. I added the "ish". He was doing well. Fundamentally sound, great free throw shooter. But

Feet like they were made in China. :(

Also he was drafted in 2002. You had him in 90s.

My mistake. what do you make of him anyway. Retired at 29-30.

All those games in China after the NBA season really killed him, I think. Bodies that big aren't meant to handle wear and tear.

7 foot big men who can move like smaller people are legit freaks of nature. Not everyone can be a Wilt Chamberlain/Shaq/David Robinson.

I'd throw him in when talking about the 00s just because it was really him and Dwight and the rest.
