Kevin Garnett...

Mikan is another interesting one. I don't think he'd be very good today...certainly not as good as KG...but how much value does being a "pioneer" hold on these lists? and how much should we hold the rules he played under against him?

Why then? Why is it so laughable to say him now, but not later? Around 30 is good, yeah?

If you're gonna joke about Mikan then you might as well joke about Wilt and Russell.

Ironic how you're trying to call me out on not arguing while linking to other people's OPINIONS. :oldlol:

Explain why you'd have him ranked in the 30s because you don't respect his accomplishments enough to rank him now. Why that arbitrary cutoff point?

The lower down on the list you go the less the gap between the players gets...There really is not a big difference between Nowitzki and David Robinson or Jerry West/Oscar/Baylor/DrJ/Pippen/Havlicek etc....even though i suspect one of those guys gets ranked 20 spots lower than another...

So if you think Mikan can be 20-30 (which i agree with btw..I'll be voting for Dirk/West/KG/etc.. before him) it's not ridiculous to see him at #14...

First off, why are you highlighting "OPINIONS" ? This is all an Opinion, it's about making the best possible Argument.

Okay so you're still incapable of debating?

In case you didn't know, I made the OP and the Posters below are just a collection of peeps who love to talk Basketball and did their Research on historical stuff...

It's no arbitrary cutoff point... It's just looking at the list and feeling that that's about where he fits... Boy you sure asking a ton of questions, guess that's the best Thing to do when you're completely helpless... More smileys please.

Probably the best Finals performer of all-time but, unfortunately, his team could never beat the mighty Celtics dynasty.

I'll continue with my KG pick.

And a quick response on the Mikan "debate"... He's one of the hardest players to rank, IMO. Only way I can justify a ranking is by looking at Mikan vs peers. But that would make him near GOAT level. Doubt his play holds up, though. That said, I'll never argue for him or Pettit/Cousy/Lucas/Guerin/Arizin in terms of being top 30, though I think they all deserve it. I just wouldn't be able to formulate a legit argument. I'll rank them as far back as I think they could possibly go, and notate that I'm ranking them as low as possible because I don't have the knowledge to rank them higher.

And tbh, this list isn't so bad. The only "glitch" is Magic and Bird not being top 5.

This list is nothing new.. It's everyone rephrasing the general consensus without making an argument or putting work in their vote.. Nobody is open to new things.

Not picking on you, though it may feel that way with our Dirk disagreement, but an argument is difficult to make without knowing against whom you're arguing, and we don't know if people did, or did not, put in work. We just know they didn't "show their work", to borrow a math term.

I think it's fair to say that we've all put in the work. By being life-long fans, we've always considered such a question. Rankings/lists are THE discussion point amongst most fans. I've been thinking about my list since I was maybe fifteen.

To be fair, the majority hasn't seen a lot of these GOAT players so that's all they could do...assume greatness and look up stats, accolades, discussions, and videos. Word of mouth too.

I for one can't really judge off of videos. I have to see them in real life and if we go by that, J-Kidd is in my top 10 GOAT. I wasn't even legal yet when I saw Jordan live so I can't fairly evaluate his game so tbh, Iverson is way up there in my secret GOAT list...but that list doesn't really matter.

As long as there is a list that the majority can't really argue with, well, that's that...a good enough list. No one's going to believe me when I say Iverson is top 5 all time. And yeah, a lot of these lists are labeled wrong. Some should be like best accolades and stats of all time or best stats and longevity of all time. Greatest is too broad of a term. Dr. J, Magic, Bird, and Jordan are probably the greatest thing that happened to the NBA. And then like Isiah/Bad Boys, Shaq, Reggie, Iverson, Yao, Kobe, and Lebron. Maybe even Linsanity. But greatest...it can mean anything, but in general, I'm sure it means on-court accomplishments.
