View Full Version : Why did MJ signed with the Wiz?
Anybody know why MJ signed with the Wizards instead of other teams?
I dunno why but I like watching Wizards MJ highlights. Kinda cool an old man schooling some young guys from time to time. He has his struggles as well I won't deny that.

I think because he was the president for the wiz and he thought he could do what the *** he wants. Oh and try to show his players how to man up and play. Something like dat.
At the end Niqqa got the bopt from the front office. Damn shame

Michael Jordan believes that the Washington Wizards "used" him and said he never would have returned to basketball in 2001 if he had known that owner Abe Pollin wasn't going to allow him to return to his position as team president.
In an interview with "60 Minutes," which will air Sunday on CBS, Jordan said that getting fired was an especially painful experience considering the moves he made to make the Wizards profitable. "I didn't have to" come back, Jordan said. "But I did it with the benefit of trying to help an organization to get back on their feet. And the gratitude that was given? It was, 'Your service is no longer wanted or needed.' So I felt like I was used in a sense."
Jordan served as the Wizards' president of basketball operations for 1 1/2 seasons, making such moves as trading Juwan Howard and Richard Hamilton , drafting Kwame Brown with the No. 1 overall pick and signing Larry Hughes . At age 38, Jordan came out of retirement to play two seasons in Washington that proved to be more successful at the turnstiles than on the basketball court. The Wizards sold out every home game that Jordan played and his jersey was among the league's top sellers, but the team never made it to the playoffs.

He wanted to play 3 years with the Wizards
Unfortunately he retired in 03 cause he knew LeBron was coming and didnt want to get schooled by an 18 year old
Could you imagine how much heat he would get for that?
like "Phleeze this 18 year old kid is dominating the GOAT?"

He had ownership/president duties that why he chose the crappy Wizards.
I really would have rather he joined Pippen in Portland or done the New York thing.

Would New York embrace if he went there? He torched NY all the time. crushed their hopes and dreams in the playoffs.

They'd have thrown a parade led by Spike Lee, lol.
The Knicks did try to throw a ton of money at Jordan in the summer of 1997 I think to get him to sign there.

Would have like to see this happen as well. I know MJ will struggle with the fresh kid out of HS but it would be hella fun to watch.

cocky and confident as **** too. he went to MJ and told him he wouldn't regret picking him.
Think it was Jordan that said something about about kiids of that time trying to make it just for the big bucks, or the next big endorsement deal. Lamented how it wasn't for love of the game.

A 40 year old put up very similar stats as a rookie bran.

Kwame Brown was the consensus no.1, every scouting report had him at no.1 that year. He was supposed to be like a thicker/stronger version of Kevin Garnett.
He had all the tools. No tool box unfortunately.

I don't think people realize how much of an improvement to your game you'd have if you had massive Dr J/MJ sized mitts.

The Draft in 2001 was supposed to feature the best crop of high school to pro talent ever, but instead I think it became more of the catalyst for re-thinking the early entry rule. Chandler, Curry, Kwame and Diop were considered can't miss big men.
Three things I think contributed to our overreaction:
1) Garnett was entering his prime, he ascended to super stardom the year prior and people were looking for the next KG
2) The previous year's draft was so bad, anything looked good
3) The best college players were pretty average: Battier, Jefferson, Murphy, Tinsley and Haywood were never really considered possible superstars.

Does anyone know how much his career ppg and stats dropped, if they did when MJ came back and played for the Wiz?

I just know if he didn't play for the wizards, his FG% is 50% or above.

I think he was at like 31.5 ppg/50.7% FG for his career pre-Wizards.

Didn't Phil lobby to get him to play in LA?
Could've coasted to another easy 3+ rings, LeCramp style.

as i remember it. he was in charge and i think part owner. he sold back the part in the team and gave up being in charge to play and bring in young talent. the idea was young players would want to play with MJ. he would play a couple years then come back in charge which he never did.
