That Cousy?

NAh, man cousy is good. He had basic handles, i admit but it was solid. It just looks bad because they were an8l against 'carrying'-- you had no choice but to dribble often and low to the ground.

But those two guys guarding him though. No lateral movement. :lol

ANyway, Here're other cousy gifs

And it ends with a great touch pass most players today would find difficult, anyway... As a playmaker, Cousy is made of the same stuff as a Steve Nash, Ricky Rubio. He's in that same tradition, the crowd pleaser who backs up style with substance and makes teammates want to play with him.

He sees a double team coming and so, instead of exposing the ball, goes into a low dribble that makes it difficult to steal. Damn, why do B-ball fans lack the most basic of common sense nowdays? Isiah Thomas would do this all the time, back in the day.

If the nba was formed today or whenever your favorite players started playing do you think they'll be reaching the same stats / highlights? Yeah right. Actually more Shaqtin a Fool highlights to be exact. Most of the generation of players learned from the past. Kobe got some of his moves from MJ, MJ adopted moves from Dr J and so on and so forth. People talking like these players were chop liver.

The D is hopeless on this play so my point stands and that hand-eye coordination is great for a big even for today standards. People keep questioning 50s/60s athleticism and skills which is ridiculous, great players are of the same caliber doesn't matter when they played.

Thing about it is that Hakeem and Kareem rarely guarded each other. Sampson usually guarded Hakeem. In the 1986 WCF, Maurice Lucas guarded Hakeem mainly.

And Kareem kicked Wilt Chamberlain's ass. Had Wilt asking for help to guard him.

The average current NBA players can't even do basic dribbling. That's why NBA players are allowed to travel blatantly and carry the ball.

Most of even the so-called "elite NBA ball handlers" can barely even get the ball up the court under FIBA rules.

That's why FIBA changed the rules to allow Team USA to play under NBA travel and carry rules and why Coach K does nothing but play fast break all game long off of turnovers.

This thread is a comedy. LeBron can go the length of the court with what 3-5 dribbles in an NBA game... with those usually being carrying violations.

Hmm let's see. Playing on warped uneven inconsistent floors, non-air conditioned gyms and locker rooms (often smoke filled), terrible practice and training facilities, terrible equipment, long bus rides (without A/C or heat), terrible to non-existent medical treatment and physical therapy, inadequate nutritional knowledge, inadequate hydration methods, etc, etc, etc.

All this while making peanuts compared to today's players (accounting for inflation) and wearing Chuck Taylors. That's not even getting into the racial and social difficulties many of those players faced on a daily basis.

Yeah, they were lucky.

to be fair every video ppl posted to discredit the OP has been nothing but bigs doing some thing stupid that shows their low basketball IQ and that's it. I've seen other videos of players from that era that actually do dribble like that or just with one single hand. Regardless I think the bigs from that time would be OK or even do great in this era, but i'll say hell no to the wing players. They wouldn't even touch the NBA floor.

That's not even a bad play... http://youtu.be/_8IXS49q1DE?t=4m9s

OP is retarded. Cousy keeps that ball on a string and splits two defenders despite not being allowed to carry the basketball with a nice hesitation dribble, than whips out a blind touch-pass that only a handful of players that have ever played the game would have seen and be able to execute. That is a brilliant play.

A lot of it was rule changes, though. You weren't allowed to palm the ball, carry, and travel back then. Those boys could play, don't get it twisted.

Plus, basketball has become much more popular over time and because of that, there is much more competition now than there was back then.

Pistol Pete and Rick Barry never had Cousy's vision to run the break.

Only Pistol Rivaled and "surpassed" him in style.

Only Magic Rivaled him in running the break.

Everyone else who has ever played, did NOT supercede him at his own strengths. And players like Tim Hardaway and AI did not "create" crossovers. A crossover dribble is a basic basketball move that has been done since before the 50's and would have been in any good guard or forwards repertoire. The NBA brought "carrying" and tattoos over to the NBA due in large part to players like AI but AI didn't invent any of those things. The post-Jordan NBA was in desperate need of a new identity, so they urbanized professional basketball. Carrying has been done on the playgrounds since dribbling has existed... it's how people who are unskilled, or who don't care about rules would dribble. In AI's case, he wasn't unskilled he just learned how you could carry the ball with style in games that didn't enforce dribbling rules (playground games), he wanted and would try doing playground moves every once in a while in the pros. When he first started he'd get called for carrying. Eventually they stopped calling it. He kept doing it, and others followed.
