View Full Version : Would it be crazy to bet on the Mavericks to win the championship?

I'm considering putting down between $500 on them. They're getting 40-1 odds, so I would be betting $500 to win $20,000

How about ya boy KD? :coleman:

Depends. How long does it take for you to make $500? If it's anything longer than a couple of days it ain't worth it.

Yes, there will be at least 4 teams in the league just flat out better than they are...even if fully healthy.

Not a good bet.

If you got money to burn, its not crazy to bet on the Mavericks. It is foolish. But hey, your money.

They're too unpredictable, a lot of people are likely to get injured on that team

At age 36? Yes.

Vs the Spurs last year he averaged 19.1 on 43% and 8% from 3.

No shame, it is just what it is. He wont explode consistently like 2011, his only ring.

I've learned my lesson not to bet on sports. Lost my lunch money by betting on the superbowl for like a week in high school. :facepalm

At 40:1 I think it's a good bet.

I don't think they will actually win, but they do have a chance.

I don't think they will actually win, but they do have a chance.

That's my reasoning, I don't give them more than a 7-8% chance of winning the title. But I don't see the Spurs repeating, and the only real land mine I see for them in the West is OKC.

It's just 40-1 is really appealing. If they were at 20-1 or so, I would want no part. But 40-1 are crazy odds for a team that I think has around a 25% chance(IMO) to make the WCF.

bet 20.000 in OKC.

I wouldn't bet on anyone out west, but that's me.

Well not 500 anyway, too much competition. Id bet on dallas as a small cover bet for a team like the warriors or OKC to win it.

against the spurs sure. all year long he hasnt played like himself against them, but thats just cause they literally throw everything at him

i can guarantee that if he played another team in the playoffs, his stats look significantly better.

look at his other playoff runs, just as good as 2011.

It'll be a good side bet. Throw another $250/ea on Spurs/OKC to cover potential losses.

odds are whats suppose to be make it not crazy

in a field where everyone has a chance, 40:1 is a pretty crazy odd to offer others just so someone would place down money for bets, no?

who knows if Vegas calculator could even put mid-season trade deadline imaginary grades to put into perspective here......

nope, probably not.

so that odd might even change dependeing how the season goes.

the question isn't whether or not its crazy to bet on the Mavs winning a championship
it's whether or not it's crazy to bet on the Mavs winning a championship right now with 40:1 odds

I like this logic. 25% might be a little heavy for me, but they're in the mix. There's a lot of matchup things out west that change perspective. And I probably wouldn't take them that heavy, but generally I agree.

The other thing is you could hedge against them down the line in the playoffs. You could bet against them in a series where the matchup isn't favorable. Especially if they're a slight favorite against some one like The Clips or something.

The league seems to be getting super valuable on Shooting, and this team has a lot of it now with Dirk and Parsons. Losing Calderon hurt a lot. His shooting and steady decision making was huge. Because not turning it over protected them defensively. The Chandler Ellis Pick and Roll with both big shooters on the other side of the floor is an element that will be exploited I'm sure. And the coaching gives them a tick extra nudge in most every playoff series.

Personally I think finding a good sleeper in the East would be interesting. The Wizards are 40 to 1 as well.

I'm sure Vegas loves anyone that puts $500 on any team in the West.

No one in the West is even a lock to make the playoffs. One 4 week injury to a key player could knock even one of the top contenders out of the playoffs.

There are going to be 11 teams going for 8 spots. 50 wins won't guarantee you are in. Once you are in you've got 3 brutal playoff matchups before you even get to the finals.

40-1 sounds tempting because I like to think their odds are higher than that, but if Chandler goes down during a playoff push or god forbid during the playoffs, the Mavs are back to relying on outscoring people to win games. And we've all seen in the past how far that gets them.

With 40-1 odds it's an attractive bet.
Of course, that's only if you can really afford to lose 500...

So then you lose $1000 after the Clippers win the title? :confusedshrug:

40-1 odds are probably pretty good for them. But the reality is you're almost definitely throwing away $500

Not to shit on anyone's betting technique, but wouldn't it be smart to bet on either the Bulls or Cavs since one of them will likely be in the finals?

The West will be a war and I'd rather place cover bets on Dallas and warriors who are capable and at big odds. :confusedshrug:

no. it would not be crazy to bet on a playoff caliber national basketball association team who won a championship 3 years ago.

you guys do realize this is a league full of many nba teams with the mavericks being one of the top teams for over 10 years now(with two finals appearances). its a league of competition. no one is guaranteed shit and to say its "crazy" to think the mavs could win next year is absolutely absurd. of course they can win and it would be a good bet at that.

not to mention they have a better squad on paper than they did last year(who took the NBA champ spurs to 7 games in the first round as an 8th seed).
