So who would have won in '98? which team pippen would have joined?

That was MJ going to bat for Phil Jackson and supporting him because the Bulls management wasn't giving assurances that they would bring Phil back.

So when Jordan says he may not come back, then Krause/Reinsdorf get awfully quiet.

Jordan wouldn't have retired. IMO if anything I could see all of MJ/Scottie/Phil signing in New York that summer if the Bulls front office refused to bring back Phil.
