I think Artest, in his prime at least, was a better defender than any version of Marion.

Not even close. Artest played with better defenders and had a reputation due to his physical defense.

In the mid 2000s Marion would guard Duncan-Dirk-Yao all in a week's work and he would guard them better than anybody else.
