All you need to know is, Jordan won 6 because he had:

Prime Pippen
Prime Rodman
Prime Kukoc
Prime Harper
Prime Kerr (bailout gamewinner)
GOAT coach Phil Jackson

Exchange Jordan with Lebron and the Bulls still win 6.

MJ's record without Pippen starting, 1985-1989

38-44, lost 1-3 in the first round.
9-9, swept in the first round.
40-42, swept in the first round.
50-32, tied 2-2 in the first round after blowing a 2-0 lead. (Pippen starts Game 5, beasts, Bulls win and finally get out the first round with MJ)
13-12.

Pippen becomes a starter for the final 2/3 of 89' and the Bulls win 9 of 11 and go on a 32-15 roll after starting 13-12...and never looked back...

You can insert any top 10 player and they probably do what jordan did.

In a recent interview, jordan chose his all time starting 5. In the starting 5, he chose pippen. This easily means he knew pippen as one of the greatest players ever and that jordan flourished due to him. He chose pippen over bird because of how great he was. Pippen = second GOAT SF.

Pippen was in his prime for 8 years? What did PJ (as a coach) win before jordan?

livinglegend

1. He only had Rodman, Kukoc, Harper and Kerr for 3. Close, though.

2. No way in hell Lebron wins 6.

PJ won 1 championship before Jordan and he also won 5 more after Jordan.
And now, tell me, how many playoffs win does Jordan have without Phil?

Please state what championship Phil Jackson won before he coached Michael Jordan. I honestly can't wait for your reply so let me retort.

While in the CBA, he won his first coaching championship, leading the Albany Patroons to their first CBA title in 1984.

LeBron has never won a Superbowl FACT

Any more stupid arbitrary facts? You can cherry pick these for any player ever. Bird never won anything without McHale. Hakeem never won anything without Kenny Smith.

Outside of his rookie season the only teams that ever beat Jordan in a playoff round were the Bird Celtics and the Bad Boy Pistons. And that was only when they had far more stacked teams than his. The only exception to this is 95 when he was walking off a baseball field not having played basketball for almost 2 years, and that 95 Magic team was pretty stacked.

Any competent NBA coach would win multiple titles with Jordan + Pippen and Shaq + Kobe.

They were both the same age with no offensive support, the only difference is Jordan actually had good series', while Lebron had the worst finals series ever for an elite player.

Just a suggestion to other posters who aren't complete idiots like livinglegend, dubeta, dradic4life, JTwhatever, etc. Let's just ignore these troll threads, they're worthless. 1-9 doesn't mean shit and no serious basketball person ever mentions this besides these morons who have absolutely nothing else to critisize Jordan over. He was young, had no help and was going up against legendary teams. MJ put up monster stats but his team wasn't that good, ultimately, it takes a team to win, they know it to, they just like trolling because they're 15 year old virgins and they're bored.

Let's do ourselves a favor and just let these morons circlejerk each other and don't fall for their troll threads, notice how no one else but us MJ fans come here and fall for their shit? No one takes these clowns seriously. MJ is the consensus GOAT, if they want to harp on 1-9 like it actually matters outside of ISH and these retards, THEN LET THEM. Even legit Bron stans like Pauk and NumberSix don't align themselves with these goofs. They know 1-9 is meaningless.

Just ignore them and let their garbage threads die, we're only encouraging them by getting in a back and forth with these dimwits.

It's a lot of hot air. What is the ceiling? I don't think anyone faults MJ for taking a game off the Bucks his rookie year. So 1-3 is fine.

The next year, he missed 64 games. The team went 21-43 (33% win pct) without him. He came back and the team goes 9-9 (50%). And he was coming back from a leg injury. :confusedshrug: The team restricted his minutes during his comeback. The first 5 games he played 13, 14, 15, 16 and 16 mins. The Bulls lost all 5 games. The next 10 games he played between 19 and 37 mins. They went 6-4. He only started 4 of these 15 games. (They started off the season 3-0 with him healthy).

They had no choice but to face the 86 Celtics. They had no business taking a game from the Celtics but they almost did just that...losing in double overtime in Boston Garden thanks to MJ's 63. That woke the Celtics up, who threw everything but the kitchen sink at him in Game 3 and Chicago lost as they should have to a better team focused on closing them out. So 0-3 doesn't look that horrible, all things considered.

The next year, the team goes 40-42. (How many could the team have won if they had the full 86 season to build chemistry with MJ instead of just a few games?) Look over the roster, look at the other teams in the conference and the league and see how many games that team should have won if you replace MJ with someone else. 50? 55? Let's say some other guy could get them 5 more wins. How many wins should the Bulls have stolen in the playoffs? One? Two? The biggest hater would probably say at most two... the team wasn't that good and the conference was deep with talent and experience.

All this over two (hypothetical) wins. 3-9 instead of 1-9. Whoop-de-do.

All this over two (hypothetical) wins. 3-9 instead of 1-9. Whoop-de-do.

^^^ This. Thank you Da Realist. This synopsis largely refutes the entire 1-9 supposition. To add my comments:

First, it's better for Jordan to make the playoff in his first two years and put up historically great numbers against the all-time great 86 Celtics than to fail to make the playoffs at all like Lebron did in his first two years. So if we want to argue "1-9," I suppose we should start arguing for Lebron, "0-0 and 0-0." But both conclusions are equally ridiculous, and "blaming" Jordan and Lebron for this is quite silly.

Second, both Jordan and Lebron came to historically bad teams, although I'd argue Jordan may have had an additional obstacle because of a number of Bulls' players rampant drug usage, including Quinton Dailey, a talented but troubled player who was said to be a cancer in the locker room. Dailey was also convicted of sexual assault, was openly jealous of Jordan, and once in March 1985, had a ballboy bring him pizza, soda, and popcorn while he as on the bench. Talk about chemistry problems...Very few superstars ever came to as poorly managed a team and "losing attitude" culture as Jordan did. Orlando Woolridge was a very talented yet career underachiever and terrible leader, and he was the Bulls' second best player after Jordan. The rest of the roster was complete junk. As bad as Cleveland was in 2003, I firmly believe Jordan came into a worse environment. And he added something like over 20 wins to the Bulls pathetic 1983 win total.

Third, losing 3 to 1 in a best of 5 series is a much closer series than losing 4 to 1 in a best of 7. Milwaukee was a clearly superior team in 1985 playoffs, yet Jordan played very well overall, over 29 points/game, solid rebounding and assists, and hit the gamewinner in their win. This was against Sidney Moncrief, one of best perimeter defenders in history and a potent offensive threat.

Fourth, as Da Realist states, how can you possibly blame Jordan for not having a higher seed in 85-86 when he missed practically the whole season and faced extreme minute restrictions when he returned? That foot injury changed Jordan's and indeed the whole Bulls' arc for the two following years. Had Jordan not had the injury, we'd have a another season where Jordan would have likely averaged over 30 ppg, and very likely his first scoring title. The Bulls would have had a higher seed, so the legendary series and 63 point game against the Celtics would not have occurred, unless in second or third rounds, if the Bulls could have won the first round.

Lastly, because Jordan missed 85-86 season, he really was pressing both to score and to win in 1987 but still had trust and chemistry issues with his still unproven and undertalented teammates. Keep in mind that Scottie and Horace were talented but very raw rookies with little overall impact in 87. The two other best players Brad Sellers (offensively talented but horribly inconsistent and mentally weak) and Charles Oakley (tremendous rebounder/enforcer, locker room leader but not offensive game) could rarely provide adequate scoring punch to complement Jordan's 37.1 ppg average. It's probably fair to assess some blame to Jordan for not getting the Bulls a higher than 40-42 season and getting a better seed. But again, when taken in context, keep in mind what happened the previous year. Should he have won some games against the 1987 Celtics and played better? Yes, I think so. 1987 was probably his worst playoff in his career. Yet I'd take that "failure" in 1987 over the multiple bad playoff "failures" in Lebron's career any day.

1-9ers. You don't really see Jordan fans on ISH castigating Lebron over his failure to make the playoffs in his first two years. Now that you've been educated as to the context of Jordan's first three years, maybe you will now be able to return the courtesy.

LAZERUSS
05-30-2015, 09:56 AM
I find it fascinating that the MJ apologists defend Jordan's "1-9" with examples of poor rosters and facing great teams, and yet, many of them will bash Wilt, whose entire playoff career involved combinations of poor rosters, putrid play by teammates in the post-season, and most importantly, going up against stacked rosters.

MJ's '86 and '87 Bulls were swept by two great Celtic teams. Chamberlain faced the Celtic Dynasty in EIGHT of his first ten seasons. And the reality was, his teams were under-dogs in SIX of them, and in the other two, his rosters were decimated by injuries (including multiple injuries to himself), and horrific coaching which clearly cost his team a title.

Then, in his last four playoff seasons, he was playing on a surgically repaired knee (that would have benched 99.9% of the other NBA players for at least one year, and likely would have limited the rest of their careers...ala Baylor.) In those four years he faced a HOF-laden Knicks team three times, and the dominant Kareem-led Bucks twice (and in one of those he did so without his two best teammates.)

With all of that, he lost to the eventual champion in TEN of his 13 post-seasons, and won a title in two more. Other than his '61 first round lost, in a series in which he averaged a 37-23, and in which his teammates collectively shot .332 from the field, he was taking inferior rosters, that generally played even worse in the post-season, up against 12 HOf-laden rosters.

And again, the ONLY time in his playoff career in which his TEAM lost against a relatively non-stacked team, he dominated the series (and all three losses were very close), but had to carry what had been a LAST-PLACE roster that he inherited.

The rest of his playoff career was spent battling superior rosters, and against HOF centers...all of whom he generally either outplayed, or downright demolished.

In his rookie season, he carried what had been a LAST-PLACE roster the year before, to a 49-26 record. Then, with a mammoth 39-23 first round series, including a clinching game of 53-22, he led his team into the EDF's, and up against a 59-16 Celtic team that was just loaded with HOFers. His team lost a game six by two points, but had Wilt not badly injured his hand in a melee near the end of game two, which rendered him to a mere mortal status in game three (in a 120-90 loss in which Russell outscored him, 26-12, and outrebounded him, 39-26), the outcome might have been different. As it was, in a must-win game five, a healthy Chamberlain exploded for a 50-35 game in a rout. Overall, Wilt averaged 30.5 ppg, 27.5 rpg, and shot .500 (in a post-season that shot .402 overall.)

His '62 Warriors, whom he single-handedly carried past the Nats in the first round, lost to a 60-20 Celtic team, with a player advantage at every slot except the center position (and again, their center was RUSSELL), in a seven game series, and with a seventh game loss by two points. Oh, and his teammates collectively shot .354 in that playoff run.

In '64 he again single-handedly carried what had been a 31-49 team the year before, to a 48-32 record, and then in the first round of the playoffs, he put up a 39-23 seven game series (on .559 shooting, in a post-season that shot .420 overall.) Then, in the Finals, his two HOF teammates (rookie Nate Thurmond, who played part-time and out of position, and Guy Rodgers), shot .326 and .257 (yes... .257, which included two games of 0-4 and 0-12 from the field)...while Russell had SEVEN other HOF teammates on his 59-21 team. All Wilt could do in that series was averaged 29.2 ppg, 27.8 rpg (and for those that discard pure rpg numbers, he had a 22.6 TRB%), and shoot .517 from the field (again, in a post-season that shot .420 overall.) Meanwhile, he not only outrbounded Russell in that series, he held him to 11.2 ppg on a .386 FG%.

The very next year, in 64-65, Chamberlain was traded for three players and a boat-load of cash at mid-season, to a team that had gone 34-46 the year before. He then took that same depleted roster to a first round wipeout over Oscar's stacked 48-32 Royals, and then to a game seven, one point loss against Russell's HOF-laden and 62-18 Celtics...in a series in which Chamberlain averaged 30.1 ppg, 31.4 rpg (with a 24.9 to 20.1 TRB% advantage over Russell), and on a .555 FG% (in a post-season that shot .429 overall.) And, as usual, Wilt's teammates shot poorly (.379.)

In the 65-66 season, Chamberlain led his Sixers to the best record in the league (55-25), but the Celtics record (54-26) was deceptive, since their starters missed a substantial number of games. And in the EDF's, while Wilt averaged 28.0 ppg, 30.2 rpg, and shot .509, his teammates collectively shot .352 from the field. In the clinching loss, Wilt put up a 46-34 game.

In every one of those series, Wilt's team was an underdog, and not only that, his teammates played even worse in the post-season...and yet, he came within an eyelash of two more titles. And, he was, by far, the best player on the floor in all of them.

So, overall, in his first six playoff seasons, his TEAM went 0-6...and all he could do was collectively average 32.8 ppg, 26.7 rpg, and shoot .505 from the field (in post-seasons that shot about .420 in that span.)

And yet, with all of that, the "bashers" would call him a "choker" (yep, a "choker" who averaged 37 ppg in his "must-win" playoff games in that span)..and would label him as "0-6."

^Hey Laz. As you know I'm not a Wilt basher, and I think you've educated plenty of us on the context of Wilt's playoff performances and that he was far from a terrible playoff performer. Now I certainly wouldn't agree that he was the GOAT overall playoff performer, but I appreciate you pointing out his changing/evolving playoff role from dominant scorer to rebounder/team facilitator in later years.

So I understand your point, and trying to point out some irony with overally harsh criticism of Wilt. Still, this is primarily a thread about Jordan's supposed playoff failures, particularly to compare him to Lebron. So I don't think we need to really need lengthy analysis/comparison of Jordan to Wilt in this thread.

Thanks for the added context! Especially on the chemistry issues and (very importantly) the difference between playing a best of 5 vs a best of 7. In a best of 5, you don't play around with a guy that is capable of winning a game against anyone on a good night. If you're the better team, you put them away. A championship team like the Celtics understood that.

Pippen and Grant weren't on the 87 team so even their raw talent wasn't added until the next year.

When 3 years can be condensed with no concern for the context, there is no search for truth -- just agenda. Much easier to draw conclusions from "1-9" than to research any context surrounding those numbers.

I certainly wasn't directing this at you.

As for the MJ-Lebron comparisons...while Lebron has generally been brilliant in his post-seasons (and it certainly wasn't his fault for most of his playoff "losses"), MJ has had the better post-season career.

And I rank Jordan as among the "GOATS" (MJ, Wilt, Magic, Kareem, and Russell), but not as THE GOAT.

None other than John Wooden made the observation that, had Wilt and Russell swapped rosters (and coaches), that it would have been Chamberlain holding all those rings.

And, at the least, Wilt likely would have had 7+ rings in his career in that scenario. Where would a Chamberlain with 7+ rings (and therefore a Russell with maybe five, or so)...be ranked all-time?

As it was, Wilt lost to the eventual champion 10 times, and in five of those, the series went to seven games, four of which were decided by margins of 4, 2, 2, and 1 point. It was not like Chamberlain was just getting blown-out in the post-season.

Again, I have no problem with those that rank MJ at #1. His resume is worthy of that. I just don't have him as a clear-cut #1.

And as for Lebron...barring injury, he still has perhaps five+ seasons left in his prime. Only time will tell where he will finish all-time. I suspect that he will join the "immortal five" as I like to call them.

When 3 years can be condensed with no concern for the context, there is no search for truth -- just agenda. Much easier to draw conclusions from "1-9" than to research any context surrounding those numbers.

That's right, they only came in 1987-88 season. Thanks for pointing that out. Trying to drag Jordan down with a clueless "1-9" mantra, with no concern for details. It makes me shake my head at the reasoning ability of some of these posters.

Yes, I respect all of that. Wilt is an historically great player, and deserves to be placed in the pantheon of all the greatest. And I would argue that Lebron still has an opportunity to do well enough in his remaining career to have a chance at being argued in the conversation of GOAT. But he's still got lots of work to do.
