View Full Version : Can we all agree that baseball is an awful sport?

The only reason for people to enjoy this astoundingly boring crap that I can think of is the fact that baseball is so deeply ingrained into our culture. It's a relic of a slower, more quiet era of history, which is why baseball is aptly considered an old man's game.

Thankfully, the MLB has been declining in popularity for years, and with the recent steroid scandals that have tainted the legacy of the sport, I can't be the only one glad to see baseball head down the path leading to its demise.

What say you, ISH?

Some people like baseball, some people like basketball, some people like football, some people like soccer, some people like curling.

I feel like I just read a children's book. Only thing missing is illustrations and a final "Though we enjoy different things, we're all the same" message.

Anyway, OP, I somewhat agree. Only time I can watch baseball is when drinking. If sober, I'm likely to fall asleep.

You realize steroids has zero effect on any sport's popularity, yes?

It might be in decline compared to the NFL but the MLB is still way more popular than the NBA.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10354114/harris-poll-nfl-most-popular-mlb-2nd

14% vs. 6%

I enjoy a game from time to time myself.

That may be so, but I've seen many a set of statistics that support the notion that the NBA is far more popular with the younger demographic, as well as a more diverse one.

Additionally, NBA viewership numbers now routinely surpass their MLB counterparts.

Baseball's popularity is most likely going to continue to plummet in the future.

Are they taking league pass into account?

That was a dig directed more at the quality of the sport itself, rather than its popularity. And yes, I realize that PED use likely runs rampant in the NBA as well, but it's not nearly as big of an issue as it is with baseball.

Nope. I love baseball. But I definitely don't make every Marlins game must watch TV like I do when a Dolphins or Heat game is on. There's too many games.

Well, there are a lot more baseball games played in a season than basketball, the same teams will play like three times in a row, and the games are televised all over the place. NBA games tend to feel like more of an event so it's no surprise individual games will garner higher ratings at times.

Point is, baseball is alive and well and will remain America's second most popular sport well into the foreseeable future.

just curious but does your pooseee smell? :confusedshrug:

I like baseball and have fond memories of playing it. I love the Marlins (even though the owner is satan incarnate) and like the more relaxed and casual pace of it all.

But in terms of the sport itself, I don't think it's that much of an impressive showcase of human athleticism. Chances are that you'll spend most of the time sitting in the dugout or standing out on the field waiting. You're not actively running around and there's not a rapid battle of strategy between the players out there.

It is boring. I'd place it somewhere between soccer and cricket.

I love Baseball

i can get why some people don't like it but i don't understand why people have to bad mouth things they don't care about. Same thing with Hockey.

What I love how things don't necessarily make sense in baseball

With the baseloaded, the heart of the order and no runs score
while in the same game someone who hasn't homered in 5 years hits a walkoff HR.

or

a batter is in a 0 for the month slump where he is hitting everything hard but then goes on a hot streak of infeild hits, bloopers, etc.

The sudden death of a walk off HR or a NHL playoff goal is something you can't duplicate in all sports

Loved baseball as a kid, now cant watch more than 2 innings without desperately trying to change the channel.

Basketball and pro football is where its at.

As long as Americans grow up playing baseball it will have it's place.

My favorite sports memories as a child were playing baseball... LOVED it

Watching playoff baseball can be extremely exciting BTW...regular season games lack excitement because there are so many of them. If there were only 16 games a year like NFL then every game would be very exciting high rating events.

intensity of the playoffs jump up in all sports but i don't think Basketball and football match up with post season baseball and hockey in that regard.

The games are low scoring making even 1 run/goal a premium. While being down in a football/basketball game isn't that critical as momentum plays more of an factor and are games of runs that swing back and forth.

Hell is a baseball game that never ends.

Baseball actually used to be one of my favorite games but since the steroid scandal I can't watch it. They are all cheaters.

Also it is just boring as shit.

Yup. I can watch NBA regular season since I just love basketball that much, but this is why I can't really get into watching baseball regularly.
