View Full Version : Never shoot after you squat and deadlift

This glorious video of me stinking up the court for 13 minutes is what happens after I lift and try to shoot

Don't even have enough energy to swing my right leg up on hooks :lol

:facepalm

Need to angrily shoot around for 9 hours to feel better about myself

Haha trust me I know XD... It's usually a bit better when I've got more energy but obviously it's far from being right. Every shot I put up today was a challenge.

Haha I'm sure Jerry West would give you the stink eye for saying that. My sweeping hooks for sure though (Which I couldn't even do like I said in the OP)

Most I've ever made is 30 in a row, from mid range and the three...Some days I just happen to be in a grove. Just started shooting around consistently this summer so I'm looking forward to the progress

Did the other day actually, the push shot seems to be easier than the set shot for me at least. Though I didn't put much time into either it was fun to fool around with.

If I'm not just casually shooting around like in the video I've mostly been focusing on stuff like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdtgUOiWHJg

Didn't attempt a serious hook since the form I use would of hurt too much, but that's probably what I've practiced more than anything. If I'm playing a game against people and the defenders right up on me I usually put my back to the basket and pull it on them banking it in....Once they get jumpy on that I go through the motions but instead of letting the ball release after the sweep I bring it down quick faking them out, pivoting on my left foot all the way around and do something like

http://youtu.be/z4kIeoG4YTE?t=1m31s

Further out though, sorta like Wilts finger roll

How or when did you learn to shoot a basketball?

Always curious how people develop their bad tendencies. Like for me, I have a problem of pushing/spinning the ball with my left thumb (I'm right handed) because I started playing when I was 3 and that was the only way I could get the ball high enough to reach the 10 foot baskets. It's stuck with me ever since, so my rotation a bit jacked. Almost Joakim Noah-esque. Reggie Miller does something similar, I believe.

You squat and dead lift same day? Savage bro. My advice, not that you asked, would be to Do pulling exercises on one day and push exercises on another. Personally I mix squats with with shoulders, dead lifts with back and bis, core with chest and tris. And cardio whenever, Usually basketball.

OP how good are you at shooting during a game?? My shooting during shoot around is total crap. but when I get into a game it improves by like 30% its weird. I know alot of people who go the other way. Unstoppable during shoot around but suck in a game. I guess thats just from pressure of the shot actually mattering and the fact that they have to deal with defense. But I dont understand my problem. not thats Its that much of a problem.

I dont need anyone to tell me what exercises do and dont do for the body

I was a personal trainer in 2008 with a certification that i actually took a course for.

I also lift weights on a regular basis

I dont play basketball anymore, i have other things to do in my life as ive gotten older which is another reason I barely post here anymore.

But i do have the credentials to critique someone on working out, especially when theyre making it a point to tell everyone they do it

I always thought bench was the worst. Of course, I was on and off with serious benching. But I'd go in and then would square up for a J and it would feel like my arms went limp about halfway through and the shot would fall about 3 feet short.

It's like those dreams you have where you are fighting and your punches are just setting your hand on someone.

Tbh he's right. And squats and dead lifts are considered to be heavy lifts. If you're doing them on the same day you're not getting the full benefit of them.

People are different :confusedshrug:, Pau Gasol is a professional basketball player and he most of the time doesn't look ripped either. Just because he doesn't look shredded doesn't mean he's in poor shape. Maybe he used to be a little bit fatter and has been improving by the year? Maybe he's an ectomorph?

Just started again not too long ago, plus my diets been extra shitty lately so I'm tired/bloated. Used to be in decent shape but I fractured my sternum and tore a few muscle fibers bench pressing back in 2010. First time since then I can lift without pain. Only reason I drove that point home is to let people know that the reason I'm running around with the quickness of an old man is because of that....and that some of my shots don't have much energy to them VS when I'm fresh.

Somatotypes are absolute bullshit. It's garbage created by a psychologist back in the 50s who really had very little experience with physiology.

Somatotypes are a myth. Period. They were created by a guy who took nude pictures of college kids, then made up stories about them based on the photos and their transcripts. The entire concept has been soundly debunked by science. There is no such thing as an endomorph, mesomorph, or ectomorph.

That's all there is to it.

But in college, I always shot best after lifting... the first 10-15 mins would be so rough, but then my body just... got in a groove. I can't explain it. But that's when I consistently shot the best.

Who else hates double rims? Not to be contradictory, but I like double rims. I think we sometimes grow to settle for less than perfection on indoor hoops. If we're tracking our jumpers indoors and we rattle one home that hits four different parts of the rim and backboard, we often simply count it as a make and subsequently label it a good shot.

Many times though, I think a well made shot while practicing should be one that goes down clean (a swish or something close to it). I think double rims help in that regard. A lot of those dead bounces that tend to lead to a junky make indoors often do not reward outside. As such, it makes us lock in tighter and further perfect our shots.

One of my favorite aspects of basketball comes after an extended stretch of outdoor play. After one grows accustomed to unforgiving double rims, the first time back indoors often feels so rich, as if every shot has an opportunity to go through the hoop.

I actually agree with you looking at it like that....It's part of the reason why I try to bank it in as often as I do...And despite my horrid form it's helped me hone it in a bit. I'm surprised I get it in as often as I do sometimes

2. Rain- Wet ball

Lifting about a month, after a four year break after a sternum fracture/torn muscle fibers. Before that I lifted for a good two years, though I had no idea what I was doing at the time. And since I was 5 but I always just shot around. First summer I've shot with any consistency... At least every other day for 2-3 hours..sometimes 5-9 hours.

It's fun making N00B gains despite the fact I'm going really light atm.

right now Im just getting back into the swing of things but it's fun to set goals for myself....like benching more than what I used to do (240)... used to workout like a tard so it'll be fun seeing what I can do with a bit more knowledge about everything.
