View Full Version : If you had to chose, which city would you live in: New York City or Los Angeles?

For me: New York City
Why: I grew up here and I do like the fast pace. I do admit we aren't that friendly. If you try driving in NYC you will probably need a tylenol after. Pretty girls everywhere of all different races. Also Yankees, Mets, US Open, Knicks, Nets (well recently of course), Rangers, Islanders (...lol).
I went to undergrad (finishing it up this year) outside of NYC in another state. For grad school, I do hope to be in NYC. Live there in my 20s and 30s.

I guess it depends on preferences. Either way, these cities are amazing .

Also in terms of safety, even the proclaimed bad areas in NYC such as East New York and Harlem really aren't that bad.

LA is the center of the universe.

Weather>>>NYC

Less congested

Better beaches

Tijuana, San Diego, Vegas all driving distances

Best ball players in the world.

Disneyland, Knotts, magic mountain, universal studios, CA Adventures, plus much much more to do and see.

Did I say weather?

B*tches.... Yeah we got those too.

L.A. is better than NYC but people really overrate it. Droughts, tons of traffic, lots of homeless, it's far as f*ck to drive anywhere, high prices, etc

Call me crazy but I always felt LA has more gang affiliated/dangerous areas than NYC especially in recent years. From what my parents told me when they moved here in the mid 80s, they say the crime rate has definitely gone down from how bad it used to be.

A lot of people who I know that have grown up here visit NYC for 3 days and end up wanting to move there.

It's the convenience of just being able to get up walk around and do anything, bars, clubs etc. and meet tons of people.

In LA everyone and everything is spread out.

You shouldn't live in either city unless you're making a LOT of money though. The quality of life just won't be there.

If you say NY, you've never spent any real amount of time in California.

The weather wins hands down. And no matter what type of person you are, you can find an area that will suit you.

That's just ridiculous. Weather is just one of many factors, and even then California isn't exactly flawless (enjoy your droughts and forest fires)

This isn't mentioning how spread out everything is in LA and how you need a car to do anything. If you prefer SoCal then that's OK, but you can't seriously act like it's not even up for debate.

The LA area is great if you have money, but otherwise it sucks. That's why everyone is moving to Texas, Oregon and Colorado, except for the illegals. The LA area also has the worst job growth of any metro area in the USA in the last 25 years, worse than both Detroit and Cleveland. I liked it ok up until about 22, after that I left to Colorado, where the rest of my family fled to. IMO, LA is in a downward spiral. The weather is fantastic though. I'd still rather go back there have to move to NYC. :hammerhead:

LA has the weather, the topography, great Mexican/Asian food, and a gazillion things to see and do within its enormous city/limits. You'll never exhaust it all. If it wasn't for the traffic (admittedly bad), the place would be perfect. For me at least.

NYC also has a gazillion things to see and do, and no one can deny its importance, but it just feels like a place to visit, not to live. It doesn't help that Manhattan is so crazy expensive.

The south is just a flat out better option to me. Charlotte/Houston/Atlanta/Dallas/etc... are just more economical and still great cities

if I could live anywhere in the country, it would be somewhere in the pacific northwest like Seattle or Portland.

I live in Oregon (Portland) now but I was born and raised just outside of L.A. and have spent tons of time there. I'm torn. Part of me hates LA and part of me misses it.

Here is a pros and cons list of L.A. Someone else do one for New York as I've never been there.

Pros -

Nice Beaches nearby
Famous, big Name Theme parks a stones throw away.
The Most beautiful ladies in North America (Not debatable)
Famous people all over the place.
Better Mexican food than Mexico.
Malibu is nearby.

Cons -
Gang infested
Trash everywhere. If you're outside your not more than 10 feet from a plastic bag on the ground. Or used fast food containers.
Graffiti on every sign, lamp post, wall, freeway overpass.
English is a second language
Unbelievably bad public schools
The worst traffic you'll ever drive in.
Frequent droughts.
Stucko houses. (Look ugly to me.)
High Cost of living in decent areas.

Neutral -

Weather - I don't consider the weather a plus. Sure it's nice in the fall and winter but It's scorching hot in the summer and you're constantly fighting to stay in air conditioned places. The heat is oppressive. Also the Air pollution sucks.

Illegals - On the one hand it's nice to get Yard service for dirt cheap but it's also a pain in the ass to have to learn Spanish just to speak with half the city.

London might have something to say about that, but yeah, in terms of economic clout, New York is untouched in the states. Los Angeles is no lightweight though--it has the third largest GDP of any metro on earth, behind Tokyo and NYC.

As of December 2011, the Exchange had a market capitalisation of US$3.266 trillion (short scale), making it the fourth-largest stock exchange in the world by this measurement (and the largest in Europe)

You can't say one city has better looking girls when you're talking about this tier.

Hell, I went out in uptown in Dallas and the only place I've seen that concentration of extremely hot women is on july 4th in vegas.

The major cities are all going to have loads.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/new-york-replaces-london-as-financial-capital-of-the-world-9198274.html

Notice the word "overtaken", which implies that London was #1, and indeed it was #1 in that ranking for years. Which goes back to when I said, that the two cities are neck-and-neck in global prominence.

But that ranking is just for total financial activity. In terms of global (not only regional) influence in finance and international banking, London is without peer currently. There's a reason why China recently chose London over NYC as the only stock exchange that can use Chinese currency. Even the US federal and municipal governments refer to the London market to set referenced interest rates on all sorts of bond and other financial contracts. They are "on the phone" with London everyday. Everyday.

Back on topic, I still prefer LA to live, but I enjoy visiting NYC tremendously.
