Even the Dallas fans on this board say the 03 Mavs were the better team. Not only did they have a fine collection of role players, they had two fringe-stars in Nash and Finley to back Dirk up. Negative impact Parker and Stephen Jackson were Duncan's second and third options. :facepalm
In 06 they were close. I'd give the edge to the Spurs.
And in case you forgot, Duncan was recovering from plantar fasciitis in 06, and he still averaged 32 PPG in the series. Now he choked.

Yes, you're right, which is why I didn't really mention how good the teams were in my original post; I just compared how well Duncan and Dirk played. You can have the better team around you and still outperform the other player. :confusedshrug:
Although even with a healthy Dirk, the Mavs were 2-1 in that series. It probably would have went to seven if Dirk didn't get injured and Nelly took him off Duncan*. Spurs-Mavs were one of the best rivalries of the decade.
*If Nelly foolishly kept Dirk on Duncan, the series probably would have still ended in six. Seriously, I don't know what he was thinking.

Shit my bad i meant 2001 dont know why i put 03. Duncans cast offensively in 03 was crap but thats one of the most stacked defensive support a star player has had OFC Duncan anchored the defense but DRob (even near the end was still guarding Shaq more than Duncan), Manu, SJax, Bowen monster defense
and Dirks best player in 06 was who? Josh Howard?   Avery Johnson as his coach compared to Pop cmon:roll:  we saw what Pop could do with a bunch of role players and 2nd fiddles hes a massive factor

No problem. I agree that Duncan's team in 01 was better, but both teams were pretty mediocre, and Dirk definitely had the better starters (Duncan had the better coach/bench).
I'd have to disagree with you on the 03 team being one of the best defensive supporting casts ever. They were great, one of the best in the league in fact, but only Robinson and Bowen were stand-out defenders in my opinion.
The Spurs were better than the Mavs in 06, but Pop wasn't a miracle worker back then. He changed his entire coaching philosophy in 2010. Before that he was consistently the best coach in the league along with Phil, but he definitely wasn't at the level of replicating what he did last year. :confusedshrug: He rode his star as much as anyone.

Dirk definitely made a "leap" from 00 to 01, but I don't think 01 was really a prime year for Dirk....it was his first year in the playoffs and in no way was he ready to battle Duncan and or the Spurs.
Dirk's prime is probably 02 through 12.

These two guys killed each other since 01. The battles are over though.
Last season Dirk played a very dirty series. He was crying all over the place for a call as if it was 06.

Dirk and Duncan both cry for calls and Dirk got hacked a lot in the playoffs. The refs let ALOT of contact go and Duncan was the one who was crying in 06 when he repeatedly choked in games they couldve won

look at his free throw form! So fluid, compare that to what he does today: stand there like an idiot with his feet pointed inwards, wait 10 seconds, then launch a line drive at the rim and brick it.

:lol :lol His current free throw form is pretty atrocious to be fair. Wonder how effective it is though compared to his previous form.

Past two years: 77% in the Regular Season. 78% in the Playoffs.
That's pretty damn good for a big as notoriously bad at the line (supposedly I should say) as Duncan.

It is insane to think that Tim Duncans highest scoring game was just an average scoring night for Wilt in 1962... like, think about that, 53 points would have been nothing to even bat an eyelash at if that was Wilt in 1962. And he would have more than double the amount of rebounds. I seriously hope one of Wilt's 50+ point NBA games surfaces one of these days, it's a god damned tragedy not a single game of his from his scoring years exists on film.

30 PPG in the RS, 22 in the Playoffs, and 18 in the Finals. Scores 50 PPG in the RS, 35 in the Playoffs. 22 in the elimination game. 22 in a game 7. GOAT RS statpadder.

LOL, the refs did everything they could to keep the Spurs in Game 7. It was obvious Dallas outplayed them all series long. The only gifted game for Dallas was the end of Game 4.
Even the bullshit Stackhouse suspension and suspicious calls in Game 6 helped the Spurs

Parker wasn't a liability, but he had a negative impact based on the role he had to play.
Nash was basically the third option, and he averaged 16/4/7 on good efficiency from 01-03. Parker was expected to be the second option, but his scoring was inefficient and he didn't pass the ball enough. If the Spurs had a proper second option in 02 and 03, Parker would have played his role much better, as he would have gotten better looks and had better players to pass to.
Nash was in his prime in those years and Parker was still a teenager, so I don't hold it against him. But when I first watched Parker enter the league I had no hopes of him ever becoming a star...he obviously proved me wrong and then some.

They're both great players, and both Dirk and Duncan had incredible series in 06.
32/12/4/3/56% shooting after playing with plantar fasciitis all season long and a 41 point game 7 is insane. Dirk had a great clutch series.

Choking is 4th quarter crunch time.................just off my head Dirk blocked Duncan when he was going for a gamewinner that wouldve won the Spurs the game and prolly the series
another one Duncan had a crucial turnover that gave Dallas the edge then Dirk fouled him out when SA were up with not much time left.
He missed a FT in one of those games in the last minute that wouldve gave SA safety blanket but they ended up losing
2 games they couldve won
