Kids and street ballers strive to be like...MJ, melo, kobe, ray allen, reggie, dr j, durant, iverson, magic, bird, shaq and other greats but Why do kids and various street ballers don't want to personate Tim duncan in a positive way on the court? Even people like to be like lebron on the court only for dunks but damn it must be pretty damn sad that nobody wants to be like Tim Duncan or even wear his jersey and payless sneakers:( Why ISH? Why people don't want to ascend like Tim?:confusedshrug:

I don't know the answer to the question, but it is too bad no one wants to be Duncan. One of the greatest players the game has seen.

People care more about highlights than actual success. Like the people who voted Griffin over Duncan as a starter for the All-Star game a few years back. Yet Griffin will never touch Duncan's achievements unless his prime is somehow godly.

I bet coaches would love it if more players strived to be like Duncan. Unselfish, unassuming, hard working, fundamentally sound student of the game. Doesn't talk trash, just lets his game do the talking.

I don't want to make this all about race but I do have something to add involving race.
The same reasons black kids don't strive to play like Tim Duncan is the same reason IMO that black kids play basketball and football over/before baseball.
Tim Duncan's style is not flashy or even all the exciting to watch. Just like basketball and football are much more fast paced, flashy, continuously exciting and baseball is a slower paced, less exciting moments kind of game.
Outside the Lines did a great piece about the percentage of black kids playing baseball and how much it has dropped every decade.
Non flashy and/or slower paced players/sports aren't as attention grabbing as faster paced and/or flashy players/sports.
p.s. - what I just said was somewhat evidenced by Jackie Robinson West LL baseball team out of Chicago. It got so much national press because you simply don't see black kids playing baseball as much anymore. But they should, it's a great sport and they have all the tools to be great at it. Hopefully it sparks something across the country. Baseball is another tool to get out of a place you may not want to be.

The "Duncan/Spurs boring" stuff is such a joke. If you appreciate the game of basketball, I don't understand how you could possibly make that statement.
If a guy doesn't finish with windmill dunks, he's boring? Such a joke lol I can't stand when people say that. Duncan is one of the most complete players ever. Nothing boring about the way he plays just because he doesn't twist his body in mid-air or embellish his body movements.
You would prefer to watch a player perform at a far inferior quality, just so you can watch him tomahawk dunk every 3 quarters.

If you are going to daydream about being like another person its rarely going to be the guy that looks super ordinary in his approach. If you are boring you don't want to be like another boring guy. If you are exciting you don't want to be a guy on the lowest frequency. While very competitive, he doesn't have a strong Yang presence. Its like going to a Will Smith movie and getting excited about the bland guy in the background - who does that.

I feel you, I mean really doe, most kids regardless of size don't want to be Tim Duncan.
That's why this day in age there is more "stretch" big men than ever.
EVERYBODY WANTS TO DRIBBLE, RUN, SHOOT FROM 3, AND DUNK ON SOMEBODY.
If kids even took away how Duncan uses a backboard, they would instantly be a better player.

Kids don't want to be Duncan because he's boring to them. I've been around many basketball players and not one of them wants to be Duncan. He's not flashy. Kids want to be somebody with amazing flashy moves. Most kids want to be Jordan basically. Sadly there's not a lot of appeal for quiet hardworking fundamentals. Not to say every kid is like this.
I also think it's marketed that way. How often do you see Duncan in commercials compared to Jordan, LeBron, Kobe, Durant, ect.?

Yea I also see it as school. Kids who are kool gets the most attention becoming popular and shit while the nerds get to no love and never gets the fine girls with big fluffy titties. Tim duncan is in that nerd clique.

I don't think he means who kids these days play like, but more of who the kids strive to become or be a #1 fan of.
Of course there are players that play like Andre Miller or even Duncan, but those players probably didn't grow up saying, "I want to play like Andre Miller."
The #1 and #2 reasons to all of this is flashy play and media hype.

OP is only 12 years old though and I can understand why 12 year olds would be more interested in who is on ESPN top 10 highlights but I've known mature players who are realistic in their abilities and physical attributes and try to emulate Duncan's style. Of course these people I know aren't 7" tall but in regular ball around here anything over low 6 foot is a big man.

Just because your pre teen brain doesn't understand it doesn't make it dumb.
I've known plenty of people who once they realise they are never going to be an athletic freak start to work on things like their bank shot and post up/fade away game and try to emulate old man duncan. Many people, not just kids, are drawn to the extraordinary. High flying exploits and incredibly crafty dribbling maneuvers resonate because they're different, they're original, and they're exciting forms of self-expression. We tend to be wowed by those who go above and beyond, pulling off something for which we are not accustomed to seeing. And many players are naturally attracted to trying to induce such wow.
That said, I think some kids deserve more credit. When I was younger, I wished I could dunk like Shawn Kemp but my influences were often more grounded. My shot came from Sean Elliott, my open floor breakouts came from Latrell Sprewell and Grant Hill and my willingness to move without the ball and flesh out a midrange game came from Richard Hamilton. Many kids or adults are fans of the spectacular but still pick and choose strategies and influences from more realistic corners. I've personally come across a bevy of players throughout the years who've tried to over-use the window in honor of Tim.

I never said a lot of people either, keep taking those ESL classes, I just said I've known plenty of people who were strongly influenced by his game and that it was usually as they aged and gave up on the dream of being able to throw down flashy dunks and drives. I remember everyone wanted to be Shaq. He let fat men back on the court. We haven't had a big like that since. I don't consider Tim a "big" man, and Dwight the Blight will never get to that level.

Shaq may be the exception because he had such freakish skills and athleticism for his size. My point stands though. Street ballers primarily try to emulate the skills of perimeter players, not PF's and C's. OP knows this but is running out of ways to push his anti-Duncan agenda.

This is one of the most troubling things I have ever read in my life. Duncan has one of the most complete low-post arsenals ever. There is an enormous difference between "creativity" and "dunking like Shawn Kemp." Duncan is easily the best post player of his time.
