And just out of curiosity, who originated the term "empty stats"? Was it someone on Insidehoops or has it been thrown around a lot before elsewhere?

dont people get tired about talking bout the same player over, and over, and over again?
Kevin Love this, Kobe that, Lebron this and Jordan that
i wanna throw marcus camby out there, stealing rebounds from teammates, always leaving his man to go for the block
him winning DPOY is one of the biggest jokes in the history of the NBA

Are you kidding me? People were calling TMac "First Round Virgin", then came Mr. Playoff Virgin to "overshadow" him.
LMAO at people putting in the same sentence a guy who's won almost as many titles as Bird, went to as many Finals as Jordan and missed the Conference/Division Finals more rarely than Magic and a guy who has played 6 years and still has less playoff success than rookie Spanoulis. :lol

Denver has not had even close to a better big man since he left and he actually made the team a lot better I don't get how a guy who makes a team better puts up empty stats.

That's a pretty good one. Another legendary stats guy was Eric Dampier. There's a story about him back when he was with the Warriors. They were in last place in the Pacific and Damp was just dogging it and barely trying towards the end. It was the final game of the season against the Clippers and someone on the staff noticed that Damp was only 8 blocks away from getting a cash bonus on his contract. Right before the game someone mentioned it to Damp off hand. "Dude, you only need 8 more blocks, too bad it's the last game of the season." Damp was undeterred. He got his 8 blocks... in the 1st quarter, then didn't even attempt a block for the rest of the game. He tied the record for most blocks in a single quarter and got his bonus.
I heard this on the radio from the GSW announcer. They were talking about talented guys who were just lazy. Here's the box score for the game if you're curious.

None of those guys are better than Camby, well maybe Nene (but his effort.aggressiness was always inconsistent) but dude Kmart/Faried and Birdman are all shit compared, Camby on the Nuggets was a beast, the reason they want to the WCF was cause of Billups replacing Iverson. I don't get how you can always prop up Faried and say Camby was empty stats.

what should i say, you obviously think Bamby had some great impact
but the nuggets got better after dumping Camby and replacing him with players that worked harder
i used to cringe every time he took a jumper. too many cringes par game

I remember him shooting at his own basket so he could get the rebound he needed for the triple double.
Yes, I think that would qualify nicely.

What about Bernard King?
He led the league in scoring in 1985 with almost 33 points per game and his New York Knicks won 24 games that season.
While it is true that he got injured at the end of that season, it hardly impacted their win total for New York that season.

While it is true that he got injured at the end of that season, it hardly impacted the one total for New York that season.
A current player from today that is obvious is Carmelo Anthony, whose teams never amounted to much of anything. At least he can fall back on playing well in international competitions.
Trivia: How many playoff series has Carmelo Anthony won in his career?
kevin love easily. no one comes close

He's up there. 28 career playoffs games is weak sauce.
I remember when SLAM magazine and Spike Lee tried to argue that King deserved the '85 MVP over Bird. What idiots.

Well, it'd be interesting to see what the perceived lowest value of a stat would be, or average... like what you'd get just by being on the floor for per 36 minutes.
Nobody has ever even averaged 0 or 1 ppg I don't think. That would be pretty funny though.

Shareef Abdur Rahim
This is what I was thinking. Empty stats to me is a player who is forced in a role greater than he should have and gets numbers simply because of the people around him. Rahim played for shitty teams, got extra touches/minutes than he would have on a competitive team and put up 20+ 5x and was 20/8 guy for like a 8 year stretch. Made the playoffs once in his career at 29 as a role player.
Rahim doesn't put up those kinda statistics if your a GM and looking to make the playoffs. That to me is the definition of "empty". Grizzlies won like 8 games when he averaged 23 points, in a 50 game season.

Member for 5 1/2 years. I think you have your answer. Don't hold your breath, in 2024, ISH, or its spiritual successor, will be the same thing. Maybe it will be Jabari vs MJ then? Who knows. And every page of 50 threads will contain 30 posts about why so and so is GOAT, 12 reposts(with half of those being just a few posts under the one they just started), 3 posts on remember when(rehashing some blown call/obscure news event), 2 posts that are about Euroleague by users who don't know where the euroleague section is, 1 post about why some teenager claims to be older than they are and how they know everything about the NBA, 1 slightly original post but in the wrong forum section entirely, and 1 high quality post where even the trolls take a step back, and say "damn, good thread".

You gotta go with guys like Rudy Gay and Corey Maggette. Players that put up 20ppg on solid efficiency but somehow make your team worse.
