Littlefinger is the son of a very minor lord. his ancestral lands are a tiny, unproductive, impoverished piece of land in an area of westeros known as the fingers. Its how he got his nickname, littlefinger

Baelish's dad was a war buddy of catelyn tully's father, hoster tully. Despite the fact that Baelish's dad was an extremely minor lord and hoster tully was either the heir to riverrun or already the lord of riverrun and overlord of the riverlands they became friends in the war of the ninepenny kings.

hoster tully agreed to foster littlefinger and raise him at riverrun. littlefinger fell in love with hoster tully's daughter catelyn. She friendzoned him. lysa tully the younger sister fell in love with littlefinger, but he wasnt interested in her.

eventually hoster tully arranged for his oldest daughter catelyn to marry the heir to winterfell and the north, Brandon stark. littlefinger challenged brandon stark to a fight and got beat easily. brandon would have killed littlefinger, but catelyn begged him not to kill baelish, saying that he was only a boy. wounded baelish was allowed to stay in riverrun to recover before being expelled. obviously Hoster tully was pissed someone from as minor a family as littlefinger would dare think he could marry his daughter.

also While he was at riverrun and being rejected by catelyn in favor of brandon stark, littlefinger got drunk and lysa snuck into his room and had sex with him. littlefinger thought it was catelyn and called out her name. Its why littlefinger thinks cat loved him and why he thinks he took her virginity. Since he is never a POV character, we dont know if he is just projecting this delusion or if he truly believes it. Eg. since we go inside POV character's heads everything they think is their genuine thoughts, they might be wrong because of a lack of information, but its their genuine thoughts.

lysa would have sex with littlefinger again while he was recovering from the duel. she would get pregnant with littlefingers kid, but her father would force her to get an abortion.

Littlefinger refuses to accept that catelyn was not in love with him, and saw him as a brother. in his mind they loved each other and it was only because of his weak position in society that kept them apart, thus his hunger for as much power as possible. Littlefinger thinks had be been more powerful he could have had catelyn

I predict Little Finger taking over the East, North, and Riverlands. He will have to join forces with Dany. There's no way he joins the Lannisters(too much inter fighting and the're weak right now) and Tyrells(they will not happy he took Sansa) .
