I agree #8 and #24 should be both retired by Lakers, but throughout NBA ......:hammerhead:

Do you think Kobe is creep out by Brandon Jennings yet? Dude sounds like he will do anything to get his attention.

Add #6. I don't know if #23 is retire worthy just yet.. LeBron would need at least another more ring.

What? Are you saying the cavs won't retire #23 if bron doesn't win again? Or are you trying to say that the league would have to wait to retire #23 because it's for lbj instead of mj? :facepalm

Such disrespect for the (at least) 6-7 players between Kobe & MJ all-time. :facepalm

I disagree. I don't even feel Jordan's number should be retired throughout the NBA. Is he the greatest player of all time? Yes in my mind, but that's not to say no one should wear it ever.

In the end, it's just a number that identifies with certain players, nothing else.

Yeah, retire it with the team but retire a number throughout the league is stupid (unless it's Jackie Robinson and that is pretty much the only exception).

Yet, when people think of the number 23, MJ immediately comes to mind.

The NBA should do like the NHL did for Gretzky's #99--retire #23 throughout the league.

This is true and I agree. The first thing I think of is Jordan, but I still don't think it should be retired throughout the league. You can make the argument for a lot of players. Should we retire those throughout the league just because we think of a certain player first? I don't think so.

I know only of Wayne Gretzky as a pro athlete to have his number retired league-wide. NHL only really did it because his retirement year and number coincided with each other (1999, #99).

I don't support league-wide number retirements anymore. At first I was totally on board. I idolized MJ as a child, as did many others, and until very recently thought this was a great way to honour his career. In my eyes he's the GOAT, but that is a matter of preference. Basketball is about entertainment and MJ was my favourite in that regard.

But if we are retiring numbers for their merit, and impact on the game, the only thing retiring MJ's number will do is erase the history of players who have had an arguably greater impact. (Bill Russell, KAJ, Magic) Sure MJ changed the game, but who's to say that those others didn't do so either? And to a greater degree? (which is arguable, but in essence that's the whole point isn't it?)

That's all besides the point that if this is done, 30 years from now MJ's mystique will be so great, people will be telling stories about him that make Wilt's tall tales look like him just "bending the truth".

if i had to pick between #8 and #24. i'd choose #24 to be retired league wide. cause he used that number during his post shaq career. and thats when he proved he was one of the goats

kobe basically won 4 titles in 2009. then one more in 2010.

before 2009 nobody gave him credit for anything

and i think all the goat decade players should have their # retired

60's - #6
70's - #33
80's - #32
90's - #23
00's - #24

League-wide number retirements are ridiculous. For instance, why should the Pistons retire the number of an enemy whose ass they owned for 6 years?

The Pistons owned the Bulls for 3 years, dumbass. And they're still pissed MJ and the Bulls swept their clown asses in the 1991 ECF and ended their dreams of a three-peat. :oldlol:

They should bow down to the man who ended their little mini-dynasty.

Wtf are u talking about?

The guy i quoted was saying the league would be retiring #23 for lebron instead of mj  And that #6 would be retired for bron instead of Russell. I figured that was too retarded for anyone to actually say, so i was trying to see if he meant to say that only the Cavs might retire #23

"I don't think I've ever seen anybody put that much pressure on a point guard full court for a whole game," Jennings said. "It was probably the best defense somebody's ever played on me since I've been in the league -- just constantly putting pressure on me, touching me, hitting me at all times in the game. He wouldn't let me just catch the ball easy, and I wasn't able to get the ball a lot, so it was pretty difficult."
