View Full Version : Nike Wasted a Ton Of Money on Durant

No way will they ever make a profit off that contract. They were better off letting that passive-aggressive, jumpshooting loser sign somewhere else. Durant lacks marketability and any kind of charisma.

They did? They have him locked up for what, the next decade or so? Who will be the next face of the league after Lebron is done being the best in the league in the next couple years? It's KD. He will be the face of the NBA. His stock will continue to rise.

But I'm sure you know more than the people at Nike do.

They actually gonna make stupid money off this. KD sold just as much as Lebrons last year, its just Lebron taxes on his shoes, thats why he made more money. Lebron shoe are 250 and KD was like 100 bucks
big difference there

When you make a fraction of what Nike makes, you'll be entrusted with these kind of decisions.

Until then, you'll be another fat kid from the sofa of his home that doesn't even grasp the surface of how these big makerting/sponsorship deals work or of what Durant gets back to Nike.

From the above article.

"Nike will have to retail about $420 million a year worth of Durant's products to recoup its investment in him. That's not going to happen.

Nike retailed about $175 million of Durant's gear last year, Powell says, and is on pace to increase that to about $260 million this year. Those are solid numbers that are trending in the right direction. But $260 million is still laughably shy of $420 million.

So Nike almost certainly is going to lose money on the Durant deal. But that's nothing new

ESPN - "The Durant contract with Nike is a steal, says one source. Durant, while being the best player on the planet, is also likable and full of humility. One source, close to the business deal, has estimated that Durant's take over of the league will turn into billions. Asked if Durant being the best player on the planet, by quite a large margin, was reason enough for this deal, he replied, "Absolutely."

I'm finding this confusing. Say the deal is for 10 years at 285 million, that ends up roughly being 28.5 mil per year. So why would they need to make 420 per year to recoup costs?

break-even point...$285 million that goes to KD plus the R&D, marketing, production of his sneakers and KD line, and all the overhead expenses that would incorporate into recouping that $285 million mark at a break-even point. i'm sure there's more details, but basically the gist of it

People aren't factoring in the big picture here.

It's not just about the money for KD.

By getting as many of the top athletes in the game under Nike, you are in fact convincing the consumer(us) into believing that if the best athletes are wearing Nike, then it must be the best brand in the world.

Branding is very powerful and if you have the best basketball players wearing your Brand, it will maximise dollars to the entire company's revenue and boost value to the company. In this case, Nike wants to maintain its already lofty reputation in the market and not lose ground to its rivals.

There is an image association message being pushed here. It works, which is why Nike has been so successful.

Note that I don't think it's a bad business decision. You're going to lose money on KD directly, but you're preventing UA from snagging a major guy. In addition, you're going to make more money on other show lines, because of the perception of having the top players in the game.
