what Putin actually said
At the Youth Forum (Seliger), Putin answered a question by a
student from Moscow. Here is the question and the answer.
Date: August 29, 2014 (The video is easily findable on
Youtube) Transcript:
-Today we are constantly discussing Ukrainian nationalism. But
we are also concerned with the growth of nationalism in Kazakhstan, especially
in the South. We think that the president Mr. Nazarbayev is the main factor
controlling this problem. It seems that some Kazakh people have difficulties
understanding the Russian political rhetoric correctly. We see it on the web
and in our personal communications. The question is: should we expect an
Ukrainian-type scenario in case if Mr. Nazarbayev leaves his post? What are the
prospects of Eurasian integration?
Putin: - Kazakhstan is our closest ally and partner. First of
all, the president Nazarbayev is well and Thank God for now does not plan to
leave his post. Of course, as an extremely experienced politician and a wise
manager he always thinks about the future of his country.
You may see some opinions voiced on the web, some
discussions with the Kazakh nationals. It is natural that you see different
points of view because there is a lot of different people out there. Kazakhstan
is 10 times smaller than Russia, 15 million population, nevertheless it is a
large country by European standards. I am convinced that the majority of Kazakh
citizens would like to see the development of good relations with Russia. We
see it and we know it.
You know that Nazarbayev is an extremely literate manager, I
think the most literate of them all on the post-Soviet landscape. He would
never go against the will of his people! He feels what his constituents really
want. Everything he has done lately, thanks to his managerial abilities and his
political experience, serves the interests of Kazakhstan as a state.
I have mentioned this before that Nazarbayev did an
absolutely unique thing: he created a state on a territory which had previously
never featured a state. The Khazakh statehood had never existed before - he has
created it! In this sense he is an unique person for the post-Soviet space, and
he is unique for Kazakhstan as well. But, I repeat, it's not just him - it's
the attitude of the society, the majority, overwhelming majority of the society.
