1. No Phil Jackson
2. Pippen not yet in his prime
3. Celtics/Pistons

Some great teams around then and getting to the Finals was not an automatic thing like it almost is in the East now.

MJ had to get to his prime to take the ring. Many other players also had to get to their primes (27-28) to finally get there too (like Shaq).

The Central division in 88/89 was stacked as hell (other than Indiana):

Detroit Pistons - 63 19
Cleveland Cavaliers - 57 25
Atlanta Hawks - 52 30
Milwaukee Bucks - 49 33
Chicago Bulls - 47 35
Indiana Pacers - 28 54

And this was when the Cavs were looking like the next great thing with their young nucleus.

The Bulls had no All Stars other than Jordan from 84-90, he was almost single handedly going up against GOAT teams in the Celtics, Pistons and it takes time for a franchise like the Bulls that have never won before or since Jordan to build a decent team around him.

The comparison to 07 LeBron/Cavs really makes no sense because that Cavs team wouldn't have beaten any of the teams MJ/Bulls lost to during that stretch and the 88-90 Bulls were good enough to make the Finals in the 07 East and I'm pretty sure they would've taken at least a game or two from the Spurs.

Um yea of course we would. The '88, '89, and '90 Pistons were better than the 2007 Spurs.

'89, and '90 versions of MJ would absolutely TORCH Bruce Bowen. Especially off the dribble penetration. Spurs can't sag and dare MJ to shoot uncontested jumpers either. Jordan wouldn't be so shook with disrespectful non-defense that he'd lack confidence.

He'd talk shit and make them pay. The series would at the very least been more competitive. We wouldn't have gotten swept.

In the East back then? GTFO, bruh. The East was STACKED. Boston, Detroit, Milwaukee, Atlanta, Cleveland, New York, Philly. Aside from MJ (and I'm talking MJ around 1989), the team wasn't ready. When Pip and Grant finally stepped up, the East--and the League--was theirs.

How about it was strong when it comes to title contenders, and then strong overall in the late 80s with the emergence of Cleveland, Atlanta and Chicago.
