View Full Version : 1 Car, 5 Years, $100k Limit. What Do You Pick?

I've seen threads similar to this on past forums. Figured it'd still work here, too.
So say you win some sort of sweepstakes but there's a catch:
- You have a $100k budget to spend on any car (new or used)
- You cannot pocket the change; aftermarket modifications come out of your own wallet
- You must own this car for the next 5 years straight; you cannot use any other vehicle for those 5 years
- You don't have to pay for gas, maintenance or insurance
That's it. I'm just interested in what you guys would pick and why.

I've been monitoring the price on one because I may be in the market for one in 2 years and the Ferrari 355 comes right under 100k for a mint condition one.

call me crazy but the old school ferarris from the 90s look awesome. i like them better than the ones today mostly because the prices are more reasonable on old models

355 was the last year of the more traditional Ferrari. Every year after that have been some sort of hatchback-like window in the back which reveals the engine.
The 360, 430 and the current 458 have the glass back.

Here is the successor to the 355....the 360.
It has nothing on the 355 that I posted.:lol

i'd probably take the Volt. they look pretty cool too but not having to pay gas and worrying about batterly life for that span works out pretty well.
i haven't seen any Tesla tho.

Answer my own question:
I'd take a Lotus Evora with a 6-speed manual transmission. 2+2 seater so I could take my family out, too.
I would prefer a 2004 Lambo Gallardo (seen some for under $100k on cars.com) or 1999-2002 Ferrari 360, but with only 2 seats and my stipulation being I have to own this car as a daily driver for 5 years, I'd need more space.
... Wow... I put more thought into this than necessary.

You'd be absolutely insane to purchase any exotic car for anything close to half it's price or high on mileage. The cost to maintain it is close to purchasing it new.
I would of mentioned Nissan GTR but cost to own alone for brakes and rotors every 40 to 50k is insane.
I don't know about the maintainance cost for the Audi r8.
My choice would most likely be a 2015 BMW M5.

Purely for the aspect of two things...
One, I live in Wisconsin. Snow sucks to drive through in the winter, although my Audi A6 AWD over the years has handled it surprisingly well.
Two, it's more practical for me to use. Sometimes i need to haul shit around and it's annoying to borrow the in-laws truck.

That is what Audi is known for.

Even though it's "known" for this I was still surprised. I'd be driving to work seeing this big trucks struggle with staying on the road while I had no problems at all in most cases. Best thing to witness was people with their cheap 2 wheel drive SUVs get suck in a small snow banks at intersections and I just basically go through the intersection unscathed and wave.

Actually I am smart as hell.
The exotic has already bottomed out. It cant get any lower than that and it will become an appreciating asset where your M5 will lose half its value in 3 years time.
These exotics aren't being bought by people that drive them to the ground. If a 90's Ferrari is still looking new and minty, that means that car has been taken care of. That is a 20 years plus car.
Don't know any 20 plus years car will still look minty.

I know, I agree. Now that I'm reading people's responses, I do think I should've gone with something lower, like $30k or something.
It would've been more entertaining seeing people try to explain their decision for going with a base Honda Civic than it is just seeing someone say, "I'd take the Audi R8" without any explanation.
Damn, why are Americans into trucks so much? You are seriously willing to buy one of those big chattels over something like:
Porsche 997 GT3
Porsche 997 Turbo
Maserati Gran Turismo S
Ferrari Testarossa
Ferrari 360
Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
Chevrolet Corvette Stingray
Audi R8
Dodge Viper
BMW M6
BMW M5
BMW M3
and so on and so on......
(or any damn old-school american muscle, epicly restored)
Dont gimme that "Yea, but i need this for heavy duty work and uhhh...... 'MURICA!". Dont be a redneck now.

That's bullshit. I'm not spending 100k on a car. I'll buy like a 20k car and pocket the rest.

just that one car for 5 years? Everything but a station wagon, jeep, van or pick-up (i.e. multi-functional cars) would be idiotic then.
As I'm living in a European metropolitan area, I wouldn't really need a pick-up or jeep, but just for its functionality, give me a
BMW X5 M50d 7-seater. ALthough that would almost surelygo over the $100k limit with extras. If that is the case an X5 40d will be fine.
That car is probably the best you can do, functionality, comfortability and performance all considered.
