View Full Version : Why does no one use the sky hook anymore?

If a young up-and-comer like Embiid, Drummond or Davis brought that into their game, they would be literally unguardable to go with their athleticism and current skillset. Kareem became the top scorer in NBA history thanks to the sky hook, why does no one use it anymore? If I was 7-feet tall, I'd be working on my sky hook all the time.

Because it doesn't look cool.

Same reason no one does underhanded free throws. It's been proven to work, but it doesn't look cool. And lord knows you can't play in the NBA if you don't look cool doing it.

Underhanded free throws aren't any better than normal free throws. The sky hook is one of the most unstoppable moves in NBA history. People won't care if you look cool when you start dominating competition with it.

To me it always looked cool :confusedshrug: It's like pure poetry in motion, best basketball move ever.

And you make it seem like it's easy to add that to a certain player's game... Kareem was doing/trying it since he was a kid, he didn't learn/adquire it overnight, certainly not just before he came into the league or already in it, it took years of practice and doing it on many games to really perfect it, shit he still developed it (including the left hand) while already in the league. Can't ask a player to just go out there and do it, or practice just for a while and be able to do it like Kareem or even close to it.

Except that Rick Barry dominated his competition free throw wise using the underhand "granny" shot, it's easy to build consistency with and puts more spin on the spot than a regular jump shot does if done correctly.

Its a difficult shot. You have to run across the basket, bring it from the hip with your arm fully extended, jump and then release. So you have to constantly adjust it while shooting. Though a jump hook is easier to defend, its also much easier to get off and make. All you do is jump and push from the shoulder.

I would however take Kareem's footwork if I were a C.

I know that. I'm just wondering why their high school coaches haven't been encouraging them to practice this move? The best big man in the NBA today has very little moves in his offensive arsenal and can only dunk or do a running hook. I think Embiid is the closest we have to a classic center, but I don't really see him use it.

Yes, very few big men in league history have had KAJ's coordination and balance. And it is not as if he just had one skyhook shot, in the Bucks footage I have seen him use a variety of hooks and jump shots. He could even handle the ball in transition and finish with a soft touch.

Larger penlses? That has nothing to do with hook shots though.

Kobe doesn't use it too often though, but he's one of the few NBA players that still do. He also attempted, but overshot it in his first game back from his achilles injury

It's actually an extremely difficult shot. 99% of players are not talented enough to become proficient at it.

Because kids would rather do stupid fadeaways of shoot threes all day

I find it amusing that the 7-0 Thon Maker was not only taking a ton of high school 3pt shots, but was only shooting 29% from that arc, as well.

Just what in the hell was his coach thinking?
