[QUOTE]The trigger of events that led to the toppling of Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson began with general manager Danny Ferry referring to free agent Luol Deng as still having "some African in him" on an organizational conference call, league sources with direct knowledge of the probe told Yahoo Sports.

[B]"He's still a young guy overall," Ferry said, league sources with direct knowledge of the probe told Yahoo.

What does that even mean? :oldlol:

Deng is a ****ing baller, regardless of race or creed.

Deng and Ferry are both Duke players.
The Hawks made a really serious effort to get Deng.

These comments might be taken out of context.

Doesn't seem likely Ferry would offer Deng a huge contract if he really was a bigot against him.

Don't think he meant anything malicious by his comments, but they were stupid and misplaced nonetheless.

The important thing is not what Ferry said, but what it lead to. If he hadn't said this, no one would have complained to the NBA, and no one would have found out what Levenson said in that email.

I am far more offended by this than anything Levenson said. Neither was even in the ballpark of Sterling.

Wouldn't that imply he has characteristics generally found amongst Africans?

If people said Dirk Nowitzki has a German work ethic would that be a bad thing?

People used to criticize Yao Ming about being soft and some blamed his cultural upbringing.

A non-story nonetheless.

Taking any offense to that is racist, it means youre saying african is a bad thing..

Ferry was reading those words that someone else wrote.

Those weren't his thoughts.

What's racist about it doe? African's are generally considered very good athletes, and that's what the statement most likely means.

FULL QUOTE:

Hawks minority owner Michael Gearon Jr. wrote a letter in June on behalf of fellow partners at SSG Group LLC, asking recently discarded majority owner Bruce Levenson to fire GM Danny Ferry due to allegedly racist statements he made. Part of the letter reads: "Ferry talked about [Luol Deng's] good points, and then went on to describe his negatives, stating that 'he has a little African in him. Not in a bad way, but he's like a guy who would have a nice store out front but sell you counterfeit stuff out of the back.' Ferry completed the racial slur by describing the player (and impliedly, all persons of African descent) as a two-faced liar and cheat."

No that's not what it mean. :lol Go read the explanation of the comment.

It's 2014, proffessional people have nothing in their toolbox of words to use except race? This reminds me of Jeremy Lin, ESPN couldn't describe him without the word asian. It was impossible for them.

Do you have an explanation of what he meant, because I can't find one anywhere, and I would really like to know what it meant. I have actually heard that term used to describe a mechanical style of play, because most of the native Africans in basketball came to the game late, and have sort of a technical approach but not really the instinct and creativity we associate with American players, or even Euro players.

How lazy is Ferry exactly that he cut and pasted these quotes clearly without giving them any thought? I'm glad there is no further punishment, this isn't ill intended, just stupid.

First of all lets figure out if the generalization is correct.

Fact is, guys like Luol Deng and Ibaka get a lot of credit and praise for making it to the top level having come from very poor and rugged countries, and because of that they are generally looked on as guys who are amiable and easy to root for. But as we've seen from Ibaka in particular, despite the warm-hearted human interest stories and interviews about overcoming adversity, he can be an aggressive prick at times. Hell, everyone can be. But lets be real Africa is a cutthroat place. If youve 'got some African' in you, it usually means you may have a low key mean streak.

On the other hand, can we count how many scouting reports have alluded to soft euros??? Hell, how many front page ESPN articles?? You hardly even hear the word euro spoken without being preceded by soft.

Sadly, this seems to only be an issue bc when blacks are typecast, it causes an uproar that does not get applied to any other group. Strange social phenomenon indeed.
Different. First, being soft refers specifically to typical euro basketball players. Being african imply all Africans. Second, being soft is about basketball, being a cheat and liar is personal.

Your premise might or might not be right, but example is wrong.
