For those unfamiliar, it may be worth researching some anecdotes on Barnes' life and career. He was quite the character. Anyone have a favorite Barnes story?

Surprised he made it to 62. He did live a fast life.

Had the chance to interview Barnes over the phone a few years back. He was very personable and kind but the years of drug use and heavy living were apparent even in his voice.

Either way, tons of good stuff there. One of my faves:

Bob Costas recalls Barnes unique perspective of team play:

“After the game, I saw [Marvin] in the dressing room and he started giving me his state of the Spirits speech. He told me, ‘Bro, you know what’s wrong with this team? We don’t have any team play. We don’t care about each other…Let me give you an example. Tonight, I had 48 points with two minutes to go. Did anybody pass me the ball so I could get 50? Huh? No, they just kept the ball to themselves and I got stuck on 48.’”

I've been working on a history of basketball project the past five years. Ive tried to contacts hundreds of players past and present and about 1 out of 25 will take the time to talk or email, it's been a truly dream affirming process.
