View Full Version : Are there any other straight edge ISHers other than myself?

It is a lifestyle choice that I abide by.
A lot of people respect me when I tell them I don't drink or smoke or do drugs. They go, "I wish I had your discipline and mental fortitude" and other stuff along those lines and they are always so unhappy with their lives. But what they don't understand is, being straight edge is the easy choice for me and I don't need to exercise my willpower to remain clean. I love being better and more well rounded than everyone else...
It would actually be difficult if you handed me a joint and forced me to smoke it because that is when I am out of control. Or you hand me a beer and make me drink it.
The weed and alcohol are in control for ever how long those toxic substances are in my body, and to me, that is hell.
I love being in control. I love clarity. I love being blessed with the ability to remain..... straight edge.
I'm straight edge 'cause I can't get free drugs.

I wouldnt say I am Straight Edge per se but I HAVE NEVER done the following-
- Had any alcoholic beverages
- Taken any type of recreational drugs
- Eaten pork
- Smoked a cigarette
I do this all by choice, no religion or culture or any of that stuff. When I was younger my friends would try to tempt me into doing it but it makes you stronger if you make a choice of staying clean and stick to it, both physically and psychologically.

You are straight edge.
Why are you apprehensive to just come out and say it? It's something to be proud of.
Congrats on being straight edge. It is a wonderful life we live if I'm being honest. We're above silly temptations and vices don't control our thoughts and actions, WE DO, and we do it with exceptional lucidity.
For anyone out there viewing this thread... don't be afraid to take the pledge to be..

Dat brain fog.
Not a problem when you're straight edge. I understand it is not realistic for those who enjoy a social drink every now and again.
You are slightly curved, but not as bent as some of those on here who smoke dope and drink with no regard, so good on you.

I do...I think being sober is inherently better being intoxicated. Generally speaking of coarse
For someone that uses very responsibly perhaps the difference in small or even non-existent, but you would be hard pressed to find someone that actually benefits from being intoxicated vs. being sober...those would be rare exceptions.
On the flip side it would be very easy to find examples of people that benefit from sobriety.

Excessive sugar leads to high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Last I checked, those are all in the top ten and when combine kills more people than alcohol, smoking, and car accidents.
Sugar is just deadly. Try a sugar fasting. You'll see how truly addicted you are to this substance. Once you eliminate it from your body completely, a mental fogness gets lifted and all the bloatness, lack of energy, and sh*tty feeling you normally get will disappear. You will be in a natural high. It's pretty awesome.

come on dawg. Drugs aren't up there because it ain't legal, so not accessible to everyone. Overdosing on alcohol is almost always the result of peer pressure and stupidity, which would actually do humanity a favor anyway. You can feel when you have had enough to drink and can stop.

it's not necessarily about excessive intake in one sitting. a person can do just as much damage to their body getting strung out on every increasing but minimal doses of heroin as they can binging on it heavily over a short period of time. and of course side effects / symptoms will show up more gradually in one case than the other.
to overdose on sugar might be a silly hypothetical but to witness its effects on your body during steady intake over long periods of time is not only obvious but well documented.

I've known plenty of straight edge people before in the hardcore scene down here. I've never really understood why they feel the need to belong to a movement and label themselves as straight edge. None of my straight edge friends were preachy or cared when the rest of us drunk but I've known alot who had a bunch of straight edge tattoos and gear who ended up drinking alcohol.
I'm all for people who want to not drink and not smoke or do drugs but I don't see the need to label yourself as something and I don't see the need to crave attention for your lifestyle choices by announcing it to everyone. No one cares if you drink or smoke. There's a lot of straight edge kids who just do it to join in with every body else and try to feel like they are in a gang of sort. Those are the annoying douchebags who go around knocking drinks out of peoples hands outside shows and who usually get their asses kicked and then give up on the lifestyle. Not all straight edge people are like that though they are just the ones people notice and remember, just like not all skin heads are racists but people remember and notice those ones and don't realise there are things like SHARPs.

I don't know the difference because there isn't any. Sugar is made of two components: fructose and glucose. It doesn't matter if it came from a candy bar or a fruit. The difference is a fruit has other nutritional content in it that makes it healthier.

Sugar is toxic to our blood vessels, much the same way that cigarette smoke is toxic to our lungs. As sugar flows through our blood stream, it destroys the very blood vessels that carry the sugar throughout our bodies. This destruction is easily seen in people who have poor blood sugar control (like diabetics) who have high rates of eye disease (retinopathy), kidney disease, heart disease, nerve disease (neuropathy), and strokes, all caused by the destruction of blood vessels. The destruction also occurs in people who don’t have diabetes, only at a slower rate.

if you cut out all sugars you'll likely end up with diabetes at some point. Your body needs sugar to create glucose. Fruits and Candy can have the same type of sugar but that's a simplified view and ignores the other ingredients in fruit which changes the way your body digests and reacts to the sugar. Like fibre causing you to digest and break down the sugar slower which stops spikes in insulin. Iamrambo is just a pseudo intellectual spouting out bullshit he's read on the internet as fact. People are certainly eating FAR to much sugar now days but you shouldn't be cutting it all out either. Same goes for salt, fats, carbohydrates. The body needs these things in some amount. Not everyone you see who is ripped and fit is going to be more healthy than someone who is regular sized and a bit doughy.

3) Don't do any drugs at all.

I don't smoke because smoking is ****ing retarded and is not done for any reason other than to look cool or because you are addicted to nicotine/the comfort of smoking.
I don't do drugs because I refuse to use any substances as a crutch to escape life. I don't drink because I've seen first hand what long term alcoholism does to families and relationships... not to mention every drink I've ever had has tasted ****ing terrible and people are not fun to be around nor can you hold a conversation with people who have had too many.
I don't smoke because smoking is ****ing retarded and is not done for any reason other than to look cool or because you are addicted to nicotine/the comfort of smoking.
I don't do drugs because I refuse to use any substances as a crutch to escape life. The closest drug that I consume is the internet, and I'd actually argue that it's nearly as bad as hard drugs if consumed in large doses over a long time period, because I've been there and done that... so... I'm working on kicking the internet addiction but I get bored as ****.

Yeah you're just being judgemental.
Well, yes I'll agree with that. I've done my fair share of substances, granted most of it was in college and I slowed down a lot after graduating. I definitely wouldn't say I benefitted from it, I mean obviously drinking/drugs aren't good for you, but the experiences were worth it. I have a job I enjoy now and am going for my masters degree right now... like I said the alcohol/weed/drugs haven't prevented me from doing what I want to do. OP making it sound like the only option is being a strung out junkie :confusedshrug:
But yeah I do think sometimes, what if I didn't waste my time or money on this shit, how much more productive I would be :oldlol:

I love being blessed with the ability to remain..... straight edge.
straight edge??? wow you watch alot wrestling homie ?? I loved it as a kid. grew out of it. but still respect it:cheers:

2) Don't smoke. Never have.

You also sound like an intolerant asshole whose company would only be bearable after a whole slew of drinks - a lot of people who drink actually drink to escape the clutches of bores such as yourself. People like you  conceited, intolerant, boring, and very lacking in out-of-bedroom experience.

OP sure is ****ing full of himself. Being straightedge doesnt make you better than anyone. Sobriety is a great thing, but there is a reason every recorded culture (outside of the Inuit) have a tradition of mind-altering substances (including booze).
besides, anyone who identifies as straight edge (rather than just a non-user) is a pretentious idiot. But we knew that already, didnt we.
finally, sounds like OP is scared to try anything (afraid of losing control, etc.). that is not the same as making an informed decision.

good for you. I hope to give up the booze when im older. but I think moderation is okay too. anything is. booze is kinda like sweets or fatty foods. once in awhile in moderation shouldn't hurt you.

Think a good chunk of non loser drug users are just curious about altered States of consists
Indeed... that's what it was all about for me there for a while. The problem with a lot of drugs is that they last for too long and either prevent you from sleeping or when you wake up you feel like poo. I'm the type of person that needs good sleep otherwise I'm fairly useless so I need to plan certain things out accordingly. Booze and Cocaine are where it's at... it's like the perfect balance and you can choose whether or not you want to go to sleep or not unlike some other stuff.

If you eat fast food/junk food every day that could be arguably just as bad or worse than smoking cigarettes or regular drinking

Had the same experience, most of the guys who were hardcore straight edge eventually dropped off the scene and started drinking. I never saw the point in people having to identify as a group of movement when they could just say they don't drink or do drugs. Wasn't straight edge originally against promiscuous sex as well? I wonder why people ignore that part these days.

I own Da Buddha vaporizer. Whip style vaporizer.
Yeah, I quit. Got pulled over for expired tags last year, cop searched my car, found some weed residue and I went to jail. Haven't smoked since.
Haven't really missed it either. I hated having the munchies and feeling out of control. Seemed like my self-control went out the window while high. Ate whatever, beat off like crazy, and basically lived like Starface does every single day of his life. Just not good.
How bout you, bro? Still smoking that lettuce errday?

I'm the same way.. The use of toxins and other chemicals solely to alter/distort/cloud your mind/senses is abhorrent to me.
If these drugs helped you think clearer, made you smarter and increased ones overall health.. then I'd be all for it.. but these drugs just deteriorates the human body..
Self-inflicting ones self is very beta.
Abuse and addiction is one things, altering your perspection is another. It's important to look outside the box from time to time.

I'm drunk right now.
I used to smoke a lot of pot. Don't at all anymore.
Mushrooms were a "formative" thing for me a couple years ago.
I'll smoke cigs when I'm drunk.
I'll do coke anytime I have enough money to rationalize it.
Adderall is a plus. Vyvanse sucks.
That about sums it up.

Exactly. You think/feel certain ways on substances and sometimes you can come up with some truly golden stuff... other times it's complete nonsense. It's important to realize that your normal state isn't the end all be all and switching it up every now and then is fun and can be very introspective.
