American Gangster was an awesome movie. I don't even know how I got into that movie (I was like only 14, pretty sure it was rated R). I think I bought a ticket for another movie and then snuck into American Gangster :lol

I haven't looked through all the years yet, but this is really strong. American Psycho is a top 5 movie for me. Memento is a top 10. Requiem is a strong movie with great performances and some unique direction. Snatch is one of my favorite British movies, and X-Men is still one of my favorite comic movies.

I only loved the bolded here. No Country and Gone Baby Gone were also really good. I found 3:10 to be very overrated, and Jesse James was a huge let down for me. Never saw Atonement. I liked Eastern Promises as well, but not a big fan of the other movies listed by ROCsteady.

For 2009

Up
The Hurt Locker
Zombieland
Avatar
Inglorious Basterds
Hangover
District 9
Invictus

Not bad

Solid year. I never watched Up (just never got around to it). I've seen youtube clips of The Hurt Locker. Zombieland is one of my favorite movies, it's just funny and comedic. Avatar- it was OK, I thought it was overhyped.
Inglorious Basterds-
Hangover- :applause: Nice watch especially since I watched it with a group of friends that involved my crush at the time
District 9- never saw it
Invictus- never saw it.

Yeah, I think it has to be '07. Everyone goes to the Oscar bait movies for these lists but '07 had a lot of good comedies and other types mixed in. Really well rounded.

Does anyone feel like this decade (2010-current) has been kind of shitty for films so far?

Other than a few gems like True Grit, Inception, Greenberg, The Hobbit, The Wolf of Wall Street, Django Unchained, it's mostly been recycled superhero movies, transformers, etc.

Hmmm... if I remember I'll end up thinking harder, but nothing comes to mind. The most similar story wise is probably some terrible horror movie that wouldn't compare quality wise. If you ignore the story comparisons, I kind of feel the Descent has a similar feel in the sense that there is a lot of focus on a desperate female who cannot escape her location while she is in danger (and likewise has some disturbing concepts). The end of the Mist is shocking in a similar way, but otherwise is not very comparable. Both of those comparisons are huge reaches though for the most part.

Besides Wolf of Wall Street this year, I thought it was an incredibly weak year.

I'm very surprised at this since I believe it to be the best year in movies since some of those years in the 90s...actually 2000 was an amazing year after reading this thread. Anyway...

2013 had not just good movies, but great movies. Modern classics some of them.

I've said it many times here on ISH. These are two of my top most overrated movies ever.

I agree.

I feel similarly about Donnie Darko, but to a lesser extent. I did like the film when I first saw it and talked about it for a while, but after multiple viewings I think people overrate it quite a bit.

2000 for me.

Yi Yi is one of my personal favorite movies ever.

Gladiator is the best Hollywood joint of the 00s.

A couple of very decent movies in their shadow like Traffic, American Psycho, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, O Brother Where Art Thou, Memento. Pretty solid.
