Where do they get the glitz and glamour idea from? Maybe it's from the 'Golden Age' of the 20s-50s but after spending the day/night there... place is a shit hole :lol

I swear it's a junkie's paradise. There's more homeless people than actual residents. How does that make any sense? :confusedshrug:

And that smell...

Never been but that's always been my impression.

Not the mystique and glamour but poor air quality & many terrible people.

I'm a Lakers fan so obv I'd go but rather kick up in San Diego tbh.

North Hollywood is the worst. You have the dirtiest people running around at all ours of the day. Filthy in all senses drugs, sex, homeless, etc...

The whole idea that the entertainment system is located in Hollywood is a fallacy. There is no truth in that at all.. everything that has to do with movie and television production is located in many other locations. The only thing that the actual city had was music related there's a lot of club scene and rock houses around there but even that has become run down as of late.

Nothing tops New York in the 70s, be serious. I would wager Hollywood is about as safe as Times Square today. But yeah, it's a grungy part of town.

I'm surprised by this reaction--Hollywood is pretty gentrified these days. It was far worse 25-30 ago. I thought this was common knowledge.

I'm not upset, just making an observation. I didn't even come here for Hollywood, just stayed there because it's close to Beverly Hills and much cheaper. And I was called in by the director/producers of paper towns for a meeting yesterday. Bastards didn't even have a couch, I was standing the whole goddamn time.

LA is a shithole, as someone else said dirty and congested. And since it's so hot there all the time EVERYBODY uses AC's, so the air in the city has that fake plastic smell. I visited family for a couple days multiple times and was always at my happiest when I left. :lol

Next time you in Cali, go to San Francisco. It's clean, has quality air, beautiful beache. Explore the wonder that is Golden Gate Park, go to the Academy of Sciences, visit the Zoo, Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf. You won't regret it like LA I promise you.

All of California is turning into a crap hole unless you live in a sheltered area like San Diego, Bay area or Orange County. And even the Orange Curtain is receding inward every year. That's why my family began their exodus out of California in the 90s, so far 18 have left and only 3 remain.

I just went to San Fran, it sucked balls. I honestly liked San Jose a lot more.

Pier 39 + Fisherman's wharf is just a big touristy crap hole. I stayed in the area by union square and another hotel in the marina district. The marina district is cool, good food, not touristy.

Chinatown literally stunk like death. Driving around in san fran was such a pain in the ass. People from there are kinda stuck up. They have a superiority complex over all other places in califronia. I always got, "Ewww San Jose?" or "Ewww Monteray?" or "Ewww [insert other california locale]"

San Fransisco is a lame ass town XD you want to talk about shitholes, you talk about any city in Norcal-Sacramento, Oakland, Berkley, Stockton, those are shit holes, many parts of SF as well due to all the occupy hippy smackheads roaming around. Nice beaches in SF? More like rocky ass beaches with freezing water and sharks.

Los Angeles is a real nice city in some parts, the beaches are the best parts of the city, and also dirty in other parts.

Dawg you are talking subjective crap, I am talking OBJECTIVE. It's a fact the air in SF is better, the streets are cleaner, the parks are nicer, if you want to retire you go to SF not LA.

Visit El Segundo, Venice, Manhattan, Malibu, Hermosa, Redondo and Long beaches (where all the good bars, restaurants and activities are generally located), or Beverly Hills and Palos Verdez.. Into modern art? Checkout the Getty museum and/or the LA museum village. Into fashion? Hit up Rodeo drive. Into them parks? Disney Land, Knotts Berry farm and Six Flags are ALL tourist bait.

Downtown LA has a mixture of everything above except for maybe outdoor activities. Luckily everything above is located by one another.

SF is consistently listed as one of the WORST places to retire in the US. And clean? They have to wash loads of feces and transients off the street every morning. Still not as bad as downtown LA, where there is lots of graffiti and they don't clean up after the bums as good.

The air is cleaner and fresher in SF, there is no smog, that's a fact. Yall think "clean" means perfect streets. :oldlol:

The inner city neighborhoods are obviously bad in both cities, but the Western part of SF near Golden Gate Park and Sunset District is amazing. They keep that part of town in best shape. When you go East towards the Pier and downtown shit obviously gets worse.

In LA I bet you ate some tacos with the cholo Laker fans after each game, while driving down the streets hearing gunshots, inhaling smog and smoking weed. Brushing shoulders with the wannabe thugs on Hollywood, yelling with the homies at every passing fat chick like you found a gold mine. Spitting on people with Lebron jerseys while you rock Kobe's number 8.

If you look at the per capita numbers, LA is more violent than SF. But in SF you are MUCH more likely to have your business or home burglarized, property stolen or car jacked. SF has a huge problem with all types of theft across the board because as bad as the homeless problem is in LA, it's worse in SF.

Yes, the hissyfits from OC residents were highly amusing. BTW, the Los Angeles Rams used to play in Anaheim too. And the two counties? They're referred to as the Los Angeles Metropolitan Statistical area.

Rams moved out of LA due to the ridiculous black out laws, so it was a bit different. As for the Angels, weren't they the LA Angels originally??? Why is it a problem that they go back to their roots??? they played in the same stadium back then before it was ruined by football renovations.

Hate the Angels but they've been pretty good in the 00's. Already one WS and will continue to contend for years, they do have the league's top Superstar. The Dodgers will always be the top team in that market but the Angels have been more relevant in the 00's.

SF is consistently listed as one of the WORST places to retire in the US. .

Why in hell would you judge the desirability or visiting or living in a city by how it's listing on places to retire.

You missed that I was making two points.
My first point was since virtually no one on this list is of retirement age, why does that matter. He was rejecting what others have chosen as the number 1 city in America, based what appeals to old people. "Retirement Value" means cheap, hot, lots of golf courses and other old people. Of course, San Franscisco isn't cheap, so it ain't going to make the list.

In addition, I was saying, I would still take SF over all these places listed as "best"
Tampa, FL
Grand Prairie, TX
Orlando, FL
St. Petersburg, FL
Scottsdale, AZ
Overland Park, KS
Port St. Lucie, FL
Cape Coral, FL
Plano, TX
Peoria, AZ

Maybe you would pick these cities over SF. I wouldn't.

No offense to the city's residents and it certainly has its advantages if you're trying to get into acting or music, but Los Angeles was quite honestly the most uncomfortable, unwelcoming mass of humanity that I've ever had the displeasure of visiting. I've been all over the country.

I love me some New York. San Francisco is awesome. Portland/Seattle and surrounding areas were beautiful. But, LA? I stayed with a buddy out there for two weeks. I was ready to head home after the first three days.

The smog/air alone made me feel like I was slowly being suffocated to death. My buddy lived in Silver Lake, which was supposedly, at the time (this was 5-6 years ago) a trendy area. Houses were basically built right on top of one another. It didn't feel like I had any room to even breathe.

In fact, that was my general feeling everywhere in the city... too many people and an endless urban sprawl that seemed like it extended forever.

Went to Malibu Beach, Venice Beach, etc., which were all incredibly dirty. There were beautiful women everywhere, but there was a general 'cold' vibe across the whole city. Hard to explain.

It was the least appealing city I have ever visited by a large margin. I couldn't imagine living there.

I thought Northern California was awesome. I could see myself living there one day if the cost of living wasn't so damn high. It has a completely different vibe. Very laid back. It is what I imagine European cities to be like.

Sure, there are homeless (nothing like LA), but the scenery, air, people, etc. were just completely different. You'd never guess they were the same state if didn't know any better.

I also spent a few days in Big Sur, which is essentially a huge wooded area with hiking trails, ancient red woods, cabins... No televisions or computers. It was like getting back to the earth.

Then, Oakland/Berkeley/SF was just a short drive away. Spent a lot of time on Berkeley's campus and that surrounding area... very cool.

Didn't spend a ton of time in downtown SF, but the little that I did, it was remarkably clean and I love the trolly as a mode of transportation. Great food, nice people, tons of culture...

I'd highly recommend it to anyone. Northern California is the way to go.

Los Angeles is "too crowded" according to that poster yet he loves NYC--the most densely populated city by a huge margin. :wtf:
They're two completely different kinds of cities. First, LA is so spread out it is ridiculous. You have to drive and sit in traffic to get 10-15 miles. In New York, you can get anywhere in the city on the subway or in a relatively short cab ride.

Secondly, I actually did spend a ton of time in NYC. My brother went to Columbia, so his dorm room essentially served as a prime apartment in the middle of Manhattan any time I wanted to visit.

During all that time, I never found it to be unwelcoming or the locals to be rude... all of the things you hear about as outsiders. LA had a strange vibe about it... hard to explain, but it was definitely "cold."

New York feels like it is alive, like it has its own heartbeat. When you visit, you become a part of that beat and get into that rhythm. It's unlike any other city I've ever been in that way. The city is alive.

I didn't get any of that in LA. Too massive, too many people, the air is putrid, incredibly dirty, it takes 30 minutes to an hour to get virtually anywhere because of the horrendous traffic...

I just didn't like it at all. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm not making any judgements about the people who do love it and live there. It can provide a ton of opportunities and I'm sure there are cool spots just like every metropolitan area.

But, from everything I've experienced, there is no comparison between NYC and LA. They aren't anywhere close to being similar cities, so enjoying one while disliking the other isn't remotely contradictory.

I'm just busting your balls brah. I live in the Midwest and I don't think the change of seasons is a positive especially when both winters and summers tend to be extreme. Granted this summer has been relatively mild but the past winter was brutal.

The reason there are less homeless people is because homeless people would rather be homeless in great weather cities like LA and San Fran.

Lettuce be reality, most midwesterners have an inferiority complex towards the east Coast and West Coast. It's the middle of nowhere small town mentality. The reason it is affordable is because no one wants to move here.

I do agree that if you are middle class then the midwest isn't that bad. 100k salary would be a nice living in most of the midwest and even in Chicago you could live downtown on that salary. While 100k in Cali is barely on the lower end of middle class in most areas.

Ive lived in st. Pete, FL for 3 years now. I don't really miss the change of seasons, but the one thing I do miss is hills and mountains. None of that here. There's just so much more going on here than there is in my home region of southeastern Ohio.
