....will he rank ahead of Bird and Magic all-time?
#5 behind only MJ, Russell, Wilt, and Kareem?
?
No, unless we have reason to believe it wont be another team effort.

Rings as role players doesn't count in goat rankings

Playing team ball diminish a player's legacy?
At age 39, if Duncan can still play at a decent level as a rotational key piece, it speaks alot about the player doesn't it?

His top end performance just wouldn't quite be enough for me personally, but he's already in that elite group for which I'm open to really any order of preference.

Well, it would be a huge longevity boost, but do nothing for peak/prime play.

Depends entirely and only on his level of play.

If he wins 6 then he's top 4 GOAT along with MJ, Russell and Magic.

Magic isn't better than Kareem. :confusedshrug: I didn't watch either guy live, but I think in his prime Bird was better as well.

It would be incredibly hard to put him in one place, there would be legitimate arguments to have him in the 7-8 range and to have him in 4-5 range.
Really depends on his level of play and the level of competition

Kareem is in the lower tier of the top 10.
Bird and Magic are very close, interchangeable almost.

I agree.
You need to have FMVP in order for that ring to actually count.

The term role player is getting really overused.
15/10/3/2 in 29 minutes makes you a role player? I guess Dwight Howard is close to being a role player since he only scored a couple more points and grabbed a couple more boards. Maybe D. Rob was too when they won in 99. :oldlol:

Duncan is definitely ahead of Bird already, no question.

these jackasses could call every one on the spurs "role players" last year lol.
It's just damage control to try to stop Duncan's legacy from growing to where it rightfully deserves to be and I have no idea why. The guy is a top 5 player of all time IMO.
OKC beats the Spurs with no Duncan (the way he COOKED OKC down the stretch of game 6 still makes me mad), but it doesn't even reach that point because they would have lost to the Mavericks in round one.

That was an all time great moment. Game on the line, just throw it to the 38 year old GOAT PF and let him carry you home. Top 5, no question RIGHT NOW. He wins a 6th, top 3 NO ARGUMENT.

yeah lol. It was badass but Brooks was pissing me off so much. He literally was switching Reggie Jackson and Derek Fisher onto Tim Duncan in game 6 of what was basically the Finals that year :lol

Well this year it's gonna be Morrow guarding Duncan, so we'll be in much better shape :lol

He's already ahead of both for me, #5 behind MJ, Kareem, Russ, and Wilt.
I honestly don't get how people keep criticizing his peak...the dude is one of the most impactful players on the court ever. If we value defense...as we should...I'm taking 2001-2003 peak Duncan to build a team around over anyone besides MJ, Shaq, and Kareem in the past 40 years or so. Maybe Hakeem.
I would kill to see peak Duncan on the current Spurs. It would be a slaughter worse than the 01 Lakers through the western conference playoffs..

Duncan was always ahead of Bird ever since 2003. Larry Bird always played next to high caliber All Star point guards like Nate Archibald, and Dennis Johnson. Duncan has won championships with undrafted role playing, journeyman, starting at the one. Made a scrub like Avery Johnson knock down clutch baskets, and made Malike Rose relevant:oldlol:

The same ppl knocking Duncan for not having 100% fmvp are the same ones who got Kareem and Kobe in their top ten. Duncan is nearing top five status and it imo can be greatly argued with another ring.
Watching old man Duncan work a younger Haslem like he was just some play toy was just crazy. Duncan continues to impress me years after we all thought he was done.

People already are. Kinda funny since he could have been ranked over them by 2013, when he played better than he did in 2014 and most probably in 2015 too.
But his team won and didn't lose like in 2013, so he gets ranked over them in 2014.

Should I really care if he averages 13/8 with solid D and Parker or Kawhi wins FMVP?
Not that I still care about all-time lists anyway...

If Tim Duncan wins a sixth championship this season it means that Greg Popovich is in the conversation as greatest coach in NBA history with this assortment of non stars and role players.
Greg Popovich deserves to be in the same conversation as Red Auerbach and Phil Jackson.
