This is the reason why he's one of the all-time greats. Still working on his game while others his age are just contemplating on retiring. Now defenders will have to time their jumps faster to even bother Dirk. :lol Might as well just foul him before the attempt.

"Dirk Nowitzki to have improved shot for Dallas Mavericks" has to be the most surreal (and scary) basketball headline of the year.

Changing your shot after refining it so many years could be tricky. He might have an up and down year trying to adjust. Not sure if he has the years left to do this, considering his shot has been pretty deadly already with this current technique.

NIce :applause: and it only took till he was 35 to address the issue...

His shot was much faster in 01-02 era, so he'd be coming back to his old technique

I think this means that he will be run off of screens somewhat. Now don't get me wrong he won't be a Reggie Miller, Rip Hamilton type player. But I am willing to bet that with Tyson back, Dirk will get some more down screens to free up for a jumper.

A la: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFQULwmvcwk

And the quicker the release the less he has to be "open" to get it off.

Dirk is 7 ft tall and already has an unstoppable shot. Not sure why he's changing it.

This could hurt or help him. Like somebody already said his shooting % will probably be up and down this season

Does Dirk ever need to be "open" to get his shot off? Post him up and he can get that fadeaway against anyone on single and even most double coverage. Your run him off screens or set shots and he gets them off because he's 7 feet tall with a stupid high release as it is already.

Wasn't like he was taking too long with it or that it was in danger of getting blocked... . At this stage anything you try to do quicker/faster is a bit of an energy drain as well. He doesn't know that now but this even happens with a gulf swing.

He doesnt need it. Hes already one of the best shooters ever. Id be more afraid of this tanking his %s

It is a huge benefit for him to shoot quicker. And I imagine Holger is not talking about his actual shot as much as the "windup" for the shot.

And because of the knee problem he has had the last couple of years, his release/windup for the shot has been way slower than it used to be. Especially since it is harder for him to drive to the basket so defenders crowd him more than they ever have. Quicker release will equate to more opportunities.

But don't equate speeding up his shot to changing the mechanics of his shot. Holger aint trying to change the release point,etc...

(Oh and Holger uses the physics/trajectory of shooting anyway. He wouldn't put it out there for Dirk if he wasn't sure it would be better for him. This is the same guy who has trained him since he was 16. And he basically molded him in the shooter that he is... Dirk uses unorthodox form in many ways... such as the inverted knee lock while shooting free throws.... )
