Option 1: 100K+ salary, very boring, not that intriguing
Option 2: 50K-65K salary, travel the world, do something you love (sports writer, etc)

Option 1 with $1 billion salary

Option 2, easily. The happiest moments in your life, is when you're travelling. Been doing a lot of that lately. That's why I feel like a changed man.

Well I live option 1 so I'll just stick with that.

Traveling once a year is fine with me.

Neither. I'd get the big salary doing whatever I feel like. I'M IN CONTROL.

You are too young to understand any of the morals and ethics involved in this decision!

Option 2 (assuming the company is reimbursing me for travel expenses)

Well I go to school, and that's boring as shit. When I get out of here, I'm not going back to a similar situation for the rest of my life. Travelling the world as a sports writer sounds ****ing great, and 50k-65k isn't even bad.

Option 2 = doing something I love.

Although after decades even 'loves' can become 'just jobs'.

Actually this is the advice I will give kids, nieces,nephews,etc... "Do something you love & don't worry about money. "

I regret not going into fields that I love.

I would honestly do option 2 even if it was the same job as option 1 except it involves travel around the world. That is a HUGE perk (at least for a mid 20s guy like me).

Personally being a sports writer for around ~60K and traveling the world sounds like a dream job. It's not too hard to live off of 60K unless you plan to live in major cities such as NYC, LA, London, etc.

Option 1.

Everything becomes a chore eventually. I know couples that struggle to get pregnant, and the constant scheduling of sex, makes the males hate sex.

Its human psychology, when you have to do something, it no longer becomes fun.

Eg. families sometimes go to orchids and pick fruit for fun, Picking fruit for a living is a super tough job.

Also as someone who has had to travel because of work obligations, it sucks balls. Especially nowadays. Unless you have never, or rarely take flights, imo its impossible to enjoy the flying experience.

Option one has 70-100% more income than option 2, and 9-5 leaves a lot of free time.

there are tons of wannabe actors, psychologists, news anchors, musicians, artists, writers, film makers, pro athletes, etc. that would strongly disagree with you.

I know a lot of psychology, english and art majors that either had to re-educate themselves, get lucky and hired for totally unrelated reasons in unrelated fields or settle for jobs like bartenders.

I shouldn't have said 'don't worry about money' , but instead 'don't put money 1st' because of course you have to make a living.

Agree that 'loves' can become a grind & eventually something one despises after decades. I always think that since I love sports I would be happy with marginal a marginal High School coaching job .

But my High School coach after 20 or so years hated coaching(ie parents & politics) because of meddling parents who think their kids should get more pt or would be All State with better coaching:rolleyes:

He loved it once ,but could not wait until retirement his last few years.

"Don't put money 1st' , but be practical & if you love animals(Vet school), Sports(coaching/ sports medicine,etc...) or whatever . Just go into a field you love . May make more money as an Engineer ,but may be happier as a coach or Vet.

Point well taken on the fact that ALL professsions can eventually become tedious.

option 1. i dont let my job define me, and anyone that has a 9-5 job knows that you have PLENTY of free time after work or on weekends to spend your money and enjoy your life. (and thats not even counting the sick days and vacation days that generally come with a full time job)

Smoke117

Option 2, obviously. Still making a decent living and not hating all the hours I have to spend at work? Sounds like a plan.

You choose option one at first, as you can do option two on the side.

I'm currently in option one phase, as I do option two on the side. Once option two starts to challenge option one money wise, option one goes away and option two becomes my number 1.

Option 2 since Canadian taxes are so damn high. After taxes, the difference would probably be only around 15k

what do you mean on the side? How do you work 2 full time 9-5 jobs?

If you did option 1 with a $1 billion salary, you could just travel the world in your free time and retire after a few months of work. :lol

You do it on the side. If it's something you love to do you're gonna do it regardless. So make it a side hustle m do your 9 to 5 Mon through Fri. After 5 and weekends you do what you love to do. I'm a musician so I do that on the side. Once it takes over as my number one income it becomes my number one job.

MavsSuperFan, that was an excellent contrarian post and it's the main essence of what Cal Newport was trying to say in all his books about how the conventional wisdom "follow your passion" is a filthy irresponsible lie.

Option 2. Money doesn't full my eyes and heart. I need enjoyment and sentimental value in what I do. Especially career wise.

My problem is, I don't even know what my "dream job" would be. I guess I'd like to be a sports writer, but then I don't know that I'd be any good at it or if I'd like doing it 24/7. I do feel like I'd get bored at anything I'm mediocre at. Obviously if I could grant myself the talent to play professional football or basketball, I'd do it at that salary because of the enjoyment involved.

I think the only "realistic" job that I know I'd love would be some sort of involvement in a pro cycling team. You'd see incredible scenery, be around world class athletes and travel most of the year.

As it is, I see my life being Option 1 anyway. I guess I'm pretty materialistic in that way :confusedshrug:
