Some 500 British citizens have traveled to Syria to fight, as have 100 Americans. The population of the United Kingdom is about a fifth of that of the States.

According to the British government, 700 fighters have traveled to Syria from France; 400 from Germany; between 300 and 500 from Belgium; 130 from the Netherlands; over 100 from Denmark; 100 from Austria; 80 from Sweden; and between 50 and 100 from Spain.

The British government also estimates that 100 Canadians have left Canada to "support or train with terrorist movements abroad. The majority of these are likely to be in Syria." And it estimates that there are 60 Australians fighting in Syria and Iraq and about 100 Australian "facilitators" helping to make this possible in Australia.

This brings the total number of Westerners who have fought in Syria to between 2,620 and 2,870, according to the British Office of Security and Counter-Terrorism assessment obtained by CNN, which is likely the most authoritative estimate yet.

British gov has only revoked citizenship for 8 british citizens :facepalm

Better nip this shit in the butt before a bunch of crazy Americans, who don't have a beef in this war, will go fight just because they are crazy.

Revoke their citizenships..no reentry back into their countries. The U.S. should also uphold the law and not just let anyone through the borders.

That's easier said than done. It's not like these people are taking direct flights to ISIS territory. They travel to other countries then there is a network to smuggle them into ISIS territory. Like, are you really gonna revoke the citizenship of anyone who takes a trip to Turkey or any neighbouring countries?

I'd imagine millions of Westerners travel to Turkey and neighbouring countries every year. How do you decide which ones to not let back? I guess Western countries with local permission COULD set up border patrols to make sure people aren't sneaking across the border into ISIS territory. Short of that, what can you do?

Of course you wouldn't revoke anyone's citizenship that travels in that region. But people that do travel to those regions and have extended stays you keep an eye on them..background checks etc. Also any country with commonsense would not let just any people through it's borders..that's death..stupidity.

Millions of Mexicans sneak across the US/Mexico border. It's not a matter of just "letting people through the borders". If the richest country in the world can't secure it's borders, what's makes you think these countries can?

This has been in the news here locally. A Australian was also recently arrested for preaching jihad here.
