Depends on the context. I prefer using splits and volume over advanced metrics like TS and eFG, but sometimes it can be easy pickings as well.

It looks good when comparing one team, who played everyone, and was never challenged, but comparing players' careers, specific seasons in an attempt to find who is better? Its garbage.

shooting percentage is relative to position, usage and range of shots
ray allen shot 45%. he's one of the best shooters ever
rick barry shot 45%. he's one of the best shooters ever
reggie miller shot 46%. he's one of the best shooters ever
people who take 5-6k three point attempts don't usually shoot over 50% fg's... especially if theyre high volume scorers

So instead of refuting any of my points in that retarded Irving/Love thread, you make another retarded thread dismissing one of the few advanced stats that is actually worthwhile?

Wonder how many Lebron is on pace to attempt in his career. He attempted 4 per game last season, and will surely shoot more as he ages and becomes a less effective driver.

When anyone bases their argument on stats alone, it isn't worth it.

I agree. Im good with raw Fg%. TS is one of those things Kobe fans like to grasp for to make Kobe look more/as eff as Jordan and lebron:biggums:

If you take a lot of threes and get to the line a lot, you obviously can't use raw field goal percentage as indicator of effectiveness.
Stop trolling.

-Getting fouled and sent to the line often negates a rim attempt (a high fg% look)
-3's go in less often...but are worth 1.5x as many points
obviously fg% is waaaay flawed compared to TS%. If you think otherwise you're a troll, or have a very tenuous grasp on math.

TS is a fabricated way to boost efficiency. free throws are awarded for a multitude of reasons and they're non defended shots. combining those percentages with real defended field goal attempts makes absolutely so damn sense.

But shouldn't the ability to get to the line and covert be part of your efficiency and ability to put the ball in the basket? :confusedshrug:

people don't get to the line exclusively on their ability to draw fouls. it's not always a skill or ability based. it's also highly dependant on officiating tendencies. it's a separate category for a reason. it's a stoppage of play field goal attempt.

My only issue with TS%, as others have alluded to, is the element of variance due to subjectivity. Not only do officiating tendencies vary from game to game, they are typically vastly different in the playoffs. A player who is heavily dependent on getting to the line may struggle more in the postseason than a player who shoots a higher raw fg%.

If two teams have the same amount of rebounds and turnovers, the team with the highest TS% always wins...
If you just look at FG% then a team that goes 35/80 from the field and 10/10 from the line with 10 threes made will lose to a team that goes 40/80 and 4/10 from the line with no threes made.
If you wanna exclude FT's you should use EFG%, FG% is damn near useless, this ain't 1975.

Further proof that advanced stats should just remain as team stats.

FT% should be eliminated from the stat, it skews ts% for the Hardens and Durants of the world
Make it just fg% an 3 pt %

FT% should be eliminated from the stat, it skews ts% for the Hardens and Durants of the world
Make it just fg% an 3 pt %Why would you eliminate FT's when they are the easiest way teams score? What's wrong with certain players being better at drawing fouls than others, wouldn't you want that on your team?
