He's not going to retire. He wants to skip most of the regular season and just get picked up by a contending team (CLE or SAS) later on.

Smart move. He's old and doesn't need to play in the regular season.

He's just waiting to see which team will give him the better chance of chasing a ring. If the Cavs are clicking by mid season, he'll sign there, or the Bulls, or the OKC. If the Heat still looks like a contender, he'll go back there because he likes living in Miami. If he doesn't like those teams, he'll sign with the Spurs by default (he's programmed to join the team he couldn't beat the season before).
