- guarded by guys taller, faster, stronger, younger and dominated them
- dominating with footwork and pumpfakes

- guards point guards with more speed
- guards younger 2guards
- guards bigger forwards
- best seasons by anyone in their 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th year


has the skills to dominate at 5-10

has the post moves/footwork/hookshots/left hand to dominate at 7 feet

Peak Kobe was a freak athlete! So in that sense, only T-Mac and Vince had the edge in that era for the All-Star-superstar calibers SG's. But he did have small hands and that's one key difference between him and MJ. I would say that Kobe along with MJ were THE ULTIMATE TECHNICIANS in terms of combining great athletic ability with great fundamentals all in one. As they age and lose some of the freakish athletic ability, they can lean on their fundamental skills. MJ at 39-40 years old was still among the best all around perimeter players in the world due to that.

only to have a near career ending injury in 2013 thats brought him down to about a 40-45 year olds athleticism...

if he makes any all nba team next year and is anywhere near what he was in even 2011.. he's by far the most effective player with the least amount of physical advantages...

And I'm pretty sure Kobe used to be as elite an athlete as most, not top shelf athleticism but definitely ahead of the pack. While Kobe's as skilled a player as there's ever been, the way you're talking about him is like he has some Mitch Richmond type of athleticism or something.

And Kobe most certainly had an advantage. Being a NBA player's son, he had access to hundreds and hundreds of hours of NBA player footage. In that regard, that right there gives Kobe quite an edge over 99% of his peers.

Kobe's not even standing up straight, you can see he's leaning with his left knee slightly bent while West is up straight as possible. Not to mention West is wearing dress shoes.

Either way, we're talking like an inch difference at max during their primes.

And with the shrinking part, athletes tend to develop a stronger bone matrix which will support their weight as they age against gravity better than a regular Joe.

Not true.. Jordan is on another level from a physical standpoint.

Jordan was a physical beast.. in his prime he outweighs Kobe by at least 15-20lbs, with broad shoulders, huge hands, 45 inch vertical, super quick/fast, best 1st 2nd 3rd 4th step.. freak of an athlete. Easily the most physically blessed perimeter player not named LeBron.

Alot of what kobe is comes from the skill set of jordan though.

So less physically advantageous = less career accolades.

Im not saying jordan is better pound for pound but im saying its gotta be equal

Go watch some Elgin Baylor, Jerry West, Dr. J footage.. nothing MJ did was innovative outside of his marketing campaign.

Jordan was unique. He did a lot of things you didn't see other players do. Maybe he took a little bit of this and added it to a little bit of that, but the way he combined everything made his game unique. Put 87-98 MJ into today's game and he'd still be the most popular. By far. You'd grab popcorn to watch his regular season games.

I'm not disputing his popularity.. again, his marketability is truly unprecedented. But really.. what move was his own/did he invent?

Sure he was super-athletic and flew in the air like nobody could before him.. but come on.. lets not act like all of his moves weren't stolen from greats before him.

I think it's simplistic to talk about a "move". There's only so many ways to throw a punch but does that make everyone Muhammad Ali? I'm talking about the expression of his game, which involved moves, combination of moves, counter-moves, the absence of moves, etc. There has been no one that has expressed himself on the basketball court like MJ did -- which is the real reason WHY he was so popular. We've had plenty of people, especially after MJ, that have been heavily marketed. None of them can fill an arena like MJ did. MJ's popularity came from the unique way he expressed himself on the court and that fed into the marketing. The marketing didn't make MJ, just exposed him to people...who then became more interested in watching him play.

Marketing can only bring you to the well. It doesn't force you to drink and it doesn't keep you there. Marketing can get me to watch a player a few times initially, but if that player doesn't interest me, I won't watch him for long. Especially not for 15 years. It doesn't matter how many commercials he has. Marketing builds on the interest that is already there.

And all any fan-based voting list proves is Kobe is an immensely popular player. I'm fairly certain the TNT poll was a fan-vote poll taken right after Kobe won back-to-back in 2009 and 2010. Kobe, until recently, has been the only player in NBA history to really rival Jordan's worldwide popularity. LeBron is getting there and probably isn't too far behind Kobe at this point, but Kobe's spent his entire career playing in a massive market whereas LeBron has spent most of his career playing in Cleveland.

Point being, and I'm not saying Kobe's rankings or accolades garnered in any of those fan-vote polls are egregiously off-base or anything, because they're not; but if you can't see and understand that they're somewhat skewed based on Kobe's popularity relative to the other great players of his era, then you're even more delusional than I thought. While you're the extreme of the extreme in terms of creepily obsessed Kobe stalker-like fans, there's a shitload of similar Kobe fans out there...and there's especially a whole hell of a lot more of them than there are Duncan and Shaq fans.

As for player of the decade, while Kobe does have a great argument for it, no other player was as fortunate as Kobe with their time in history. His age for 00-09 was 21-30. Considering shaq who was basically on the backside of his career halfway through the decade, Lebron who started his career in 04 or Duncan who loses a championship season because it's considered the previous decade...player of the decade kinda just works out best for Kobe. But again, he does have a great argument for it.

Not true.. Jordan is on another level from a physical standpoint.

Jordan was a physical beast.. in his prime he outweighs Kobe by at least 15-20lbs, with broad shoulders, huge hands, 45 inch vertical, super quick/fast, best 1st 2nd 3rd 4th step.. freak of an athlete. Easily the most physically blessed perimeter player not named LeBron.

01-10 is a decade.
05-14 is a decade

But generally speaking with decades, like the 70's 80's 90's etc, the year 2000 is not recognized as part of the 90's decade despite what is actually true in terms of the actual calender meaning of the "new" decade.
