Essentially I am looking for a tablet that is cheap, and can be used primarily just for reading comics and books, most of which were downloaded via torrent (so it needs to be flexible to do that). If it does other things that is ok but that is the primary function which is why i want it to be cheap but have a screen that is ipad-ish size.

Thanks!

Google's nexus has always been heralded for it's affordability, and with android it probably has the flexibility with file formats and apps that you'll want. Amazon's is similar but my girl has it and I don't care for the built in Amazon features and restrictions, although it may be good for what you want.

Galaxy Tabs (Samsung) and Transformer Pads (ASUS; I have this) are the other well known ones you should look at, but they are expensive, larger, and have more features.

There's no real urgency to finding it so I have time to find a good deal. I figure I'll check which fits what i need, and then try to poach one cheap when everything goes on sale the next few months for the holidays.

Thanks..

My Nexus 7 is pretty cheap and I use it mostly for reading.

I have a Kindle White that Is great for reading books. Comic books I read on my Nexus 7 and it's suitable enough for the graphic content. I hate reading books on the tablet because it doesn't have the book feel of a Kindle. Plus I hate the glaring light that slows down the reading pace.

This is the Galaxy Tab Nook.

I haven't used it, but it's allegedly designed pretty much for what you're looking to do. Although I don't know how it would handle your torrented content. And it's only 180 bucks, which is pretty cheap for this market, especially for something Samsung branded.

My mother uses a Nook and she loves it. I use a Galaxy Tab and the Nook app to read, and I've been really pleased with it too.

There was just a sale for Amazon Kindle Fire HD for $53 at Amazon Warehouse.

Reading wise, I think the e-paper or paperwhites are the best and the battery lasts a long time but since you wanna read comics, Nexus 7 2013 is great or a Galaxy tab. I think what bagel suggested is nice too but I don't spend more than $100 on my tablets anymore though :pimp:

Buy a Kindle Paperwhite if reading is your main purpose. You can pick them up for $120 and their batteries last for 8 weeks.

I have a Nexus and love it...that thing is always in my reach at home

Samsung Tablets are really where it's at, but they are pricey

I also want a M-Soft Surface just because it would be completely compatible with my desktop computer/Windows

There's about 5-6 better choices. Those don't really have a good rep.

I have an Asus MemoPad and it's pretty nice, it was the best of the cheap tablets when I bought it.

Just Wifi, but that works for me.

I have the Google Nexus 7 2013 version (latest one so far). It's wonderful. I've had it since maybe April. No issues whatsoever, and it's a wonderful experience all-around. It's retail price is from $200-$250 (you can find cheaper if you look around). Despite it's affordability it's still a high end tablet that can do a lot more than just be an eBook reader (and even at that it still does very well).

get the nexus 7

I'm still using the first gen. that I bought several years ago when they first released and it's awesome.

7 inch is better for a reader since you can hold it comfortably with one hand in portrait mode.

Can't really beat it for the price either.

You can read on all of them gramps
I just need to make sure it can read things not store bought, but downloaded, to move my library over.

I use Kobo app when reading downloaded/torrented ebooks. No problems, and the aesthetics are kickass.

It really is amazing, it's lighter than a book and as readable or even better than a physical one. I've read 100's of books since they are widely available in torrents on the Web. Not to mention facilitating websites like mobilism.

Well.....I have one and it works great. And the reviews all over the place are very good. And it's dirt cheap compared to others.

Imafellowknickfan, i want 10 inches because i read a lot of comics, and 7 inches you need to move it around, and i don't like that much.
