View Full Version : Which Players get/got more National Love than local?

Looking at Grant Hill's career this week and got me thinking about players who are respected or valued to a higher degree nationally than where they actually play.

That was the case with Hill who many Piston fans wanted to trade long before he finally was in 2000. While Hill was considered a top five player by many, very few in Detroit saw him that way.

Who else falls into this strange category?

Kenneth Faried?

Chris Bosh?

Mitch Richmond?

Kevin Love for sure.

Kevin Love for sure.

You think always or just since he said he wanted out?

He was never on the Lakers and I wasn't following him game to game, but I feel that he must be a guy who looks a lot better on highlights and on the stat sheet than he does day to day. People rooting for the team Love is on must feel cheated in a way. Here they have someone who arguably is very good to great and they still have absolutely nothing to show for it.

I'm not sure it's Love's fault by the way. It may or it may not be as far as I can judge. Nevertheless, he is a lot like Lamar Odom was in his (so-called) prime. On paper he was great. In reality... not that great on a day to day basis.

So I nominate Odom, too.

Here are some others:

Trevor Ariza
Tracy McGrady
Jermaine O'Neal

What's more, I have someone else... I know I'll get some hate for saying it, but so be it.

Shaq, especially later in his career.

He was dominant but to me it seems fans of other teams adored / liked / feared him more than the fanbase of the team he was actually playing for.

Trevor Ariza was beloved while he was on the Lakers.
Haven't really followed him elsewhere, so maybe it was just on LAL.

My votes are :
Pau Gasol
Prime Finley
Vince Carter

He grew up in Florida. Orlando loved him. As did Houston, he was a significant upgrade of Steve Francis.

You have no clue what you're talking about ...

Same thing w/ the Shaq comment. Even arriving in Cleveland, WAY past his prime people were excited to have him there as the "Dwight Stopper"

You have the most bizzare opinions you pull from your ass. Are trying to be unique with your comments? Because they factually make little sense.

Dumb basketball fans then. Because he certainly was in '96, '97, '98, and '99.

I'm not in the US.

My opinion is based on watching games, reading papers and forums, I admit that. I believe everything you said. Still, I found (e.g.: here on ISH) that opposing teams feared McGrady more than fans of his own teams liked him. Shaq was always respected by almost everyone, some of the time the least respected by his own fans.

At any rate, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. It's not the end of the world to be proven wrong on a message board.
