View Full Version : Apple sells 10 million iphones

gts

Those long lines at Apple Stores around the world translated into record iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales over the weekend.

Ten million to be exact. That beat last year's iPhone 5S opening weekend by 1 million sales.

The achievement is remarkable, considering that China wasn't a part of this year's opening weekend. Apple (AAPL, Tech30) sold 9 million iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S smartphones during the first three days of sales a year ago -- a weekend that included Chinese sales.

Demand for the new, larger iPhone 6 has been insatiable. Apple sold a record 4 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones on Sept. 12, the first day that the new iPhones were available for pre-order. Pre-orders momentarily crashed Apple's website a week ago, and supply of the super-large iPhone 6 Plus quickly sold out.

Herd mentality right there.. Note 3, Note 4 >> Any iPhone to date, and Android >>> ios.

Samsung - Down 18% in the past year

Google - Up 6% since stock split earlier in the year.

Apple - Up 44% in the past year

You can hate on Apple all you want but they're doing something right. Don't hate the product, hate the game. Better yet, buy yourself some apple stock and cash out for an android phone.

I like Apple but I have to admit they haven't done anything special with their phones these past few years and it appears they are following the trend as opposed to setting it. To be frank, Apple has not produced anything to separate it from the herd.

With that said, I will stick with my iPHone 5. I would like a bigger screen but I'm not willing to dish out $649 for a measly 16 gb Iphone 6 and I'm not sure why the 32 gb is not the standard.

I am contemplating picking up a Note 3 when the Note 4 comes out. But I'm not sure yet if I want to go back to android.

Pick up the iphone6 because the Notes are a monstrosity of a phone. I've seen people talk on it and they look dumb as hell. Like sheeps.

Don't let them fool you about being bigger is better.

Iphone6plus was made to attract Droid users because real business people know that a phone that is so big is not practical.

I thought about iPhone 6, but the size is a dealbreaker.

I'm used to the Galaxy S4. I want a screen around 5 inches. 4.7 is too small, and 5.5 (plus) is way too big... especially with that bezel

It's a sleek looking phone, but I would rather have the HTC M8, or the Sony Xperia Z3, or even the Moto X tbh.

Phones are a more personal item. They're always with you, in a weird way it (for better or worse) becomes an extension of themselves. They share with it, they communicate with it, we depend on it for many more reasons than we do a car. To many its become a need.

Study: iOS 8 crashes 78% more than iOS 7

When we covered 8 big problems with iOS 8 earlier this week, there was apparently a huge problem that was omitted from the list: it is still early for iOS 8 right now, of course, but so far Apple’s new mobile software is far more prone to crashes than the previous release, iOS 7.1. According to a study from Crittercism, which says it analyzes data from more than 1 billion monthly active mobile users, apps crash 78% more frequently on Apple’s latest and greatest version of iOS 8 than they do on its predecessor.

FROM EARLIER: 8 big problems with iOS 8

In an email to BGR, mobile application performance management experts Crittercism said that the company analyzed data across iOS users between September 17th and September 22nd, and found that app crash rates across all devices running iOS 8 landed at 3.56%.

On the same devices running iOS 7.1, apps only crashed 2% of the time, though that figure is up from 1.6% in March.

Older devices are obviously worse offenders than newer ones. As of September 22nd, apps crashed 3.57% of the time on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c and iPhone 4s (of note, Crittercism lumped the iPhone 4 into this group in the supplied data even though it doesn’t run iOS 8). Meanwhile, the company found that as of the same day, iPhone 6 apps crashed 2.63% of the time and iPhone 6 Plus apps crashed 2.11% of the time.

As far as adoption is concerned, Crittercism pegged iOS 8 adoption at 20.06% as of the 22nd, which is probably a bit low considering Apple confirmed a 46% iOS 8 adoption rate as of September 22nd.

iOS 8 is already causing Wi-Fi and battery drain issues

Just like with previous iOS releases, Apple’s recently rolled out iOS 8 update is causing issues for some device users, including Wi-Fi problems and faster battery drain, as CNET reports. This isn’t the first time a new iOS update has caused such problems, especially on older device that have been updated to the latest software version, and Apple is expected to release fixes for these issues in the near future.

FROM EARLIER: Don’t expect the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus to win any battery life contests

iOS users are already talking on the company’s support forums about the Wi-Fi connectivity and speed issues, revealing that all sorts of devices are failing them following the iOS 8 update, including last year’s iPad Air, Retina iPad mini and iPhone 5s. Interestingly, even Apple’s brand new iPhone 6 models are affected by these issues, at least for some users.

One user has already contacted Apple support, with the company advising him to simply backup up the device and restore it as new.

“Chatted with Apple support and they had me do a restore and set up as new. I did that since I’m seeing other glitches in iOS 8,” user Morac wrote on the forum. “It seemed to work after that, but I only tested for a few minutes and didn’t do the ping test (which I should have done as that would have given me a definitive answer). I then restored my backup and the issues returned. Apple support implied if restoring as new didn’t fix the problem, then it’s a hardware problem. Considering the number of reports about this, he can’t be correct.”

The iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems thread already has more than 10,000 views and over 210 replies.

A forum thread discussing battery life on iOS 8 is also open on Apple’s support section, with some users revealing they’re experiencing poorer battery life following the iOS 8 update. The thread is smaller than the Wi-Fi one, having 35 replies and just over 1,200 views.

“My battery drains very fast (100% to zero in about 4 hours with minimal usage), started happening right after I upgraded to iOS 8. Issue started happening both on my iPhone 5S and on my iPad Air after iOS 8 upgrade,” user Raghuseeth1 said.

At the same time, other iOS 8 users say they have not experienced such problems on their devices.

Obviously, such Wi-Fi and battery issues can significantly impact the overall experience of the user. Apple is yet to mention any details about the problems. For what it’s worth, the company is supposed to release a major iOS 8 update in October, to enable certain features, such as Apple Pay, HealthKit apps and SMS continuity on Macs, at which point it will likely release bug fixes as well.

For a short period of time, users may still be able to roll back to iOS 7.1.2 to make some iOS 8 troubles go away.

Not a surprise. Every new OS update will bound to have issues here and there especially dealing with older devices. I think this is done purposely on the older devices so that you are forced to get a new iPhone.

andgar923
09-23-2014, 03:13 PM
So people are complaining that a new release is problematic?

It happens with EVERY OS in every platform:confusedshrug:

But unlike other platforms, Apple will issue an update to address the issues immediately.

And unlike other companies, Apple has people whose sole job is to search the internets, log the issues customers are experiencing, and reach out to assure them that their concerns are heard and will be addressed.

And unlike Android, everybody will have a chance to install the update as soon as it's released.

When compared to Android devices, that type of customer support and software update availability it is "magical".:D

Not a surprise. Every new OS update will bound to have issues here and there especially dealing with older devices. I think this is done purposely on the older devices so that you are forced to get a new iPhone.

Most of the issues are indeed with older phones.

My wife is having issues with her 4S. She claims it isn't as quick as it used to be, although it isn't all the time only on certain occasions and with certain apps. So part of the issue is with 3rd party app developers not releasing their update.

One example I can think of is an app called 'Transmit'. The new iOS has a feature that allows you to control when you need the app to access your GPS (location). So one can toggle an option that allows the app to only use the GPS when the app is being used. At the moment the app hasn't been updated so it runs at all times killing battery life in the process.

That's an example of how 3rd parties are also partially to blame.

But this is normal with every platform and every OS release.

Updates aren't meant to devalue a device's performance and force customers to update. It simply means that the hardware isn't capable of keeping up with a new OS. iOS 8 has features that require more processing than what the 4S' OS didn't have. The 4s is from 2011, that shit is ancient in modern tech world.

The same can be said about Windows OS, Android OS, Linux, game console OS, etc.etc.

I don't think there's anything sinister about it.

buying the $650 iphone with 16 GB is useless so by default the cheapest iPhone is the 64 gb one for $750

Its almost as if they force you to pay $100 more by giving only 16gb as their base model

I'm def a droid person my self, I have the galaxy s5 and I love it.

If I could download all the same stuff onto an iPhone that I can on my S5 I would switch. But on iphones you can't dowload free music, torrents, game emulators- pretty much all the important stuff to me. Apple forces you to make tons of accounts with them and doesn't give you the freedom and ability to customize your phone that android offers.

It's all simply a matter of preference.

I prefer drag and drop and hate using itunes. Another issue is my iphone is maxed out on memory and I deleted some songs off of my iphone. But if I sync my computer, my computer will prompt me to sync the songs. Point is, drag and drop works better and is simpler. Itunes is more of a pain in the ass.

As for you people calling each other sheeps for their choices, well personally I'm glad there is competition. Can you imagine if Apple or Samsung was the only cellphone maker? Iphones already start at $649 without any competition and it would be insane to think how much they would run for if there wasn't any competition from the likes of Samsung. Not to mention think of all the advancements made in cellphones thanks to competition. Think how far the original iphone has come from now. At one point in my life I scoffed at my cousin for getting an iphone because she can use her camera to take pics, her ipod to listen to music and her computer to go on the internet. Now all of your standard smartphones do that.

30 year old samsung fanboys calling other 30 year old iphone fanboys sheep on the internet is literally the stupidest ****ing thing I can imagine. I can't wrap my head on the idea people go on forums to talk shit about a product they do not use.

Stop spending your time advertising for multi-billion dollar companies that literally give no shit about you and look at you as some mindless consumer.

The only problem I have with apple is $100 more for each storage increment

buying the $650 iphone with 16 GB is useless so by default the cheapest iPhone is the 64 gb one for $750

Its almost as if they force you to pay $100 more by giving only 16gb as their base model

What are you using that much storage for? The only thing I can imagine is movies, or you've got 10k+ songs.

For that $100, just get spotify or some streaming service for 2 years and you're good. Plus movies on even a tablet looks whack to me at times, I can't imagine how bad it would be on even the largest of phones.

This.

There are so many sheeps on here who want a big screen and storage. :hammerhead:

I watch my movies on my big screen with surround sound. I listen to music the same way too.

Video games? On the big screen too.

You're tripping. You don't listen to music when you're not at home? :biggums:

And since when is it a bad thing to have extra storage? You know those HD videos your iPhone takes now? Those will consume about 1GB of space for every 10 minutes of HD recording... If you take a lot of videos on your phone, you will have to transfer them to your computer and then delete them in order to not run out of space. I have a 64GB SD slot on my Galaxy S4, and it helps to be able to keep everything on my phone instead of deleting shit all the time. It's also nice to have a ton of music on the phone too. What if you go on a backpacking trip, want some music, and have no service where you're at? SD slot, and you can have tons of music.

Shit the Sony phone takes 128 GB micro SD expansion... I could fit my entire music library on my phone that way :applause:

Yes I listen to music but I don't need to carry 1,000 songs on me.

You need to slow down in life and evaluate what is important. Why do you really need all that storage?..because you can't take the time to sit down and properly store your stuff? This is the reason why people's privacy feel invaded because they keep everything on their phone.

There is something called Pandora that can play my music for me. If I am at a backpacking trip, then I will properly bring music with me.

Society is becoming lazy and stupid. More storage is just an excuse to not properly store your stuff and deleting the things you don't need. They tell you that you need more storage and you guys BELIEVE them.

Need? No. I don't need it. Want? Yes, especially if i'm spending $700 on a phone

..because you can't take the time to sit down and properly store your stuff? This is the reason why people's privacy feel invaded because they keep everything on their phone.
Actually, all my stuff is properly sorted. My music library is all alphabetical and sorted by genre. The beauty is that I can simply unload all my organized music onto my micro SD card. I don't have to worry about my privacy being invaded because I'm not a celebrity...

Also, I use google + to automatically upload all my photos/videos on wifi, but I don't want to have delete videos off my phone in case I want to watch them later. That has nothing to do with privacy

There is something called Pandora that can play my music for me. If I am at a backpacking trip, then I will properly bring music with me.
Fair enough, but I don't have to worry about that since I can just leave a ton of music on my SD card and have my library at all times. Also, I hate using things like Pandora. I like to pick an album and listen

Society is becoming lazy and stupid. More storage is just an excuse to not properly store your stuff and deleting the things you don't need. They tell you that you need more storage and you guys BELIEVE them.
It's not a matter of laziness bro. I already delete things I don't need, but I want to keep the things I want on my phone and not be forced to delete them because of storage limitations.

Are you telling me that if you had the option to use an SD card slot on iPhone, you wouldn't use it? :coleman:

Not sure if you want to hide your shiny new iPhone's newfangled design in a bulky case? Maybe you should -- apparently, it's quite pliable. iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users on Twitter seem to be finding small, but noticeable bends just south of the handsets' volume controls. Front-pocket storage is all it takes to give the handset a gentle slope, according to some users, but it can be bent other ways too. Back pockets and malicious YouTube users (video from Unbox Therapy after the break) can both bend the device to their will.

Update: Just for kicks, the same guy tried the same thing with a Galaxy Note 3, and while its plastic frame gave some squeaking under the pressure, it showed only slight warping after two attempts. There's the difference in materials to account for, but of course we're not surprised -- we've seen how Samsung tests its large phones under pressure.

http://mashable.com/2014/09/23/bent-iphone-6/

Consider this a PSA: Don't keep the iPhone 6 Plus in your front pants pocket for too long. It just might bend.

Reports of slightly bent iPhone 6 Plus devices are cropping up on a number of Apple forums, suggesting that the items began bending after sitting in one's front pocket for a long chunk of time.

http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-6-plus-bending-issue-2014-9

MacRumors forum user "hanzoh" wrote that he sat with an iPhone 6 Plus in the front pocket of his suit pants during a four-hour drive on his way to a wedding. He said the phone remained in his pocket as he sat during dinner, while he was dancing, and on his four-hour drive home. The phone looked like this after about 18 hours of sitting the front pockets of a pair of suit pants:

Yesterday, I left at 10am with the iPhone in my left FRONT pocket of my suit pants. I drove 4 hours to a wedding, which also involved a lot of sitting during dinner etc but also 2-3 hours of dancing. I left at 2am and went to bed, driving home 4 hours back.

If you listen to a lot of music, you need to get a 4 GB or more data plan and that's ~$20 per month more than the lesser plans.

~8 GB goes for the OS and other stuff. ~3-4 GB for pictures and videos. That leaves you with ~4 GB of free space for apps and music. So yeah, you need 32 GB.

It's all simply a matter of preference.

see, now this is an opinion i can respect.

but yet he doesnt conclude his post with "therefore people who buy apple are stupid and wrong and I will laugh at them!"

I got an HTC One and put a case on it. Dropped it plenty of times, not a scratch on it... and it's a beautiful phone in the nude without the case. But I chose protection over showing off how sexy my phone is.
