View Full Version : Gun to your head, Who is the Greatest Player ever iyo

No debate or anything, just want to see what people's opinions are

Just list who the player is and 2 or 3 sentences why
For me, Jordan. This guy has the competitive nature of a major Fortune 500 CEO, and the work ethic to match, his game evolved multiple times and he still dominated. He never lost in the post season when he had HCA, meaning when the Bulls were favored to win they never got upset. No other all time great can say that about their team.

I wouldn't say you have to hold it against him, it's just something MJ has that others don't...

lol I was just being an ass, but I think HCA is a silly thing to hold against a guy. Especially since the conferences aren't equal.

Something like SRS (robust metric that measures team strength) as opposed to HCA (which is based on wins) would be better IMO. MJ very well might come out on top in that measure too (he probably would), I just think it's safer to use.

Kobe scored 81.

To score 81 in the modern era prove you are the GOAT. He literally had the greatest "peak"

When comparing all the greats... they all have similar stats and similar achievements. All were MVP worthy year in and year out, won championships, bla ba bla

What sticks out is a guy who scored 81 one game to will his team to victory. He scored 62 in 3 quarters once as well.

He has the greatest game of anyone ever, and that is what makes him stick out from all the other legends.

Kinda depends on the scenario, to me.

If it's street ball, stylin' on everybody, that's Connie Hawkins. Dude was the sleekest, shiftiest, coolest player I ever saw on concrete.
With those giant hands, if Kawhi Leonard ever wanted to model his offense after a player without any doubt it should be Fly Hawk.

If it's the all round guy that can do literally everything from bomb 3s to play physical D on a power forward or a center, high speed sprint, drive, pass..... but does it with a bludgeony no-style fugly complete nadir of Connie Hawkins fashion..... probably LeBron James.

If it's a perimeter guy, it's Jordan. The guy was the whole package from outside, for 10 years or more the greatest player in the greatest league there is.

If you need a guy who can get any and every player on the team involved, and get their very best game all year long, and then get them all to elevate even higher in the playoffs, that is........... a hard call. Either Magic Johnson, or Tim Duncan (I only saw Russ when he was old so can't say on him).

If you need a guy who will continuously give you unstoppable offense, great rebounding, and virtually error-free, immaculate defense for an entire generation(!!) gimme Jabbar.

If it's the greatest all-round offensive force in history, greatest rebounder in history, combined with the highest level of defense I ever saw, that's Wilt Chamberlain.

So basically giving credit for winning games you're supposed to? I can see that but I think winning games/series you have no business winning is more impressive, just my opinion.

Anyhow my pick is Mj, gun to my head. He rates pretty high if not top 5 in any criteria you can dream up.

He did that too, 1993 ECF, 1998 Finals, 1989 "the shot", not that they didn't have a shot to win... But they didn't have HCA

But I think the reliability of never losing when you are supposed to seal the deal is more impressive, but you definitely need to account for both

Jordan for me too, just because of his competitiveness and his scoring ability/Clutch to take over a game and his transcendence to basketball in general.

But I definitely can see why someone would pick a guy like Wilt/Kareem/Russell/Shaq who can be so dominant in the post. If it was an all-time draft, I might pick one of those big men over Jordan as you can always pair another talented wing and still have a championship caliber team.

Never travel,
greatest footwork,
greate off the ball,
greatest post player,
greate FT,
greatest Midrange,
natural killer,
always turn up the gear in 4th quarter and he's the great wall of china, a sentinel defensively, nobody can score on him especial guys like barrea and terry and he can guard 1-5 position especially shaq who he can shut down with ease.

MJ hands down.

Dominated an era full of bigs.

Was the best offensive player and defensive player.

Only player that I can think of that dominated in the paint and the perimeter on both ends as well.

The man changed basketball history, redefined what basketball is and was. How so? we judge players from the past and future differently. Hell, standards have changed so much that we even judge athletes from other sports based on MJ's legacy/achievements. Our expectations across the board have completely changed.

Ball in somebody's hands to save the universe, I don't care how much time is left or the situation... MJ is the best bet. He can create for himself and others, won't chuck up a shot, won't choke and pass it up, he can create from the perimeter-escape double and triple teams, or simply catch in the post and hit a turnaround.

Does anybody trust any other player to save the world under any situation?

He beat the MonStars for lord's sake!
