I haven't seen that game so I'll assume that Kareem did dominate and Hakeem played awful defense all the game... that is still only a 2nd year pro against a savvy all time great veteran. Hakeem wasn't a great defender when he was young. He gambled a lot and was still relatively unintelligent and inexperienced in guarding the paint, and you can see that there with him gambling a lot on those entry passes. He blocked a lot of shots but that's partly as a consequence of the unnecessary gambling. He matured as a defender as he became older, particularly in the mid 90s.
