2006, Amare missed 79 games. Suns lost their best pick and roll player and his 26pts 9 boards from the year before. Lost 8 more games but still finished 2nd in the West.

The right man won.

I think Shaq deserved it in 2000, 2001, and 2005. He wasn't as dominant in 2005 as he was in the early 2000s, but the competition was also weaker. I think he didn't win because people had a hard time giving an MVP to a player who was not at their peak while Nash was the better story.

Shaq was killing it in 98. Only played 60 games and Jordan played all 82 so it rightly went to him.

Shaq or AI? Tough decision.

Nash made 2nd seed with his second best player missing the year. Great leader, made everyone better. :confusedshrug:

Jordan was gonna win anyway, plus everyone know that it might of been Jordan's last season plus the bulls were number 1 in the east too, so I think Shaq had no chance of getting that trophy. Shaq was great in 01 but the fact that Iverson led a horrible team to the finals and being number 1 definitely puts him over Shaq. Shaq had 01 kobe too. Nash still didn't deserve 06, there was others that were better.

If you were following basketball in 2005, you would know that Shaq was the HEAVY favorite to be MVP until the last few weeks of the season.
The media then worked themselves into a frenzy on Nash and he won it in an upset... 1066 votes to 1032.
Shaq was the MVP favorite basically all season, and in the eyes of the vast majority of observers was the best player in the NBA by a considerable margin.
Any other analysis of the situation in factually incorrect.

I don't think you followed the NBA then.
I vividly recall the goings on of that season and Shaq was the clear favorite for the MVP.
He made the Heat the best team in the East, a 16 win increase.
He averaged 23/10 and his overall impact was huge.

Nash was arguably the second best player on his team.
It was an absurd MVP vote.

Stoudemire averaged 26/9 with 1.6 blocks on 56%.
He was a dominant force.
How many minutes a game were Nash and Stoudemire not on court together? What other players were on the court?

Diaw, Marion and Bell had fantastic seasons in 06. Yet all hail the PG and his 10apg in the high possession offence that Chris Duhon averaged 7 apg in.

Nash had a great season, but he couldn't carry Shaq's nuts@ck into the arena let alone impact the game more.

And the FACT remains, Shaq WAS favorite in 05, and it was a HUGE media driven UPSET.
That FACT is not changed by revisionist statements from teenagers that didn't even follow the NBA that year.
I still have numerous games, one with 2 weeks to go in the season, where commentators don't even mention Nash when discussing the top candidates for MVP.

It seems not many people watched Steve Nash back then.

He was, individually and team-wise, one of the most unstoppable offensive force of all time. Of..all..time.

Calling the MVPs undeserving would be like calling Magic Johnson's MVPs undeserving. Sure there are other people who also deserve to win but Steve Nash also fully deserve those MVPs.

Philadelphia Inquirer - Feb. 20, 2005

Asked on Friday at a media session for tonight's NBA All-Star Game whom his choice for MVP would be, he didn't hesitate.

"If I had a vote, I would always vote for Shaquille O'Neal every year," Iverson said of the Miami Heat center.

Even over himself?

"Definitely," Iverson said. "I know what I do every year. Everybody else knows. I don't have to toot my horn."

Then he tooted O'Neal's horn.

"I feel Shaquille O'Neal is the most dominant player that I would always love to play with," Iverson said. "That would be my fantasy player to play with. I'm looking forward to playing with him the first time in my life [tonight]."

This kind of comment is ridiculous.

How good is Rubio gonna do if K Love stayed on the Twolves this year and got hurt?

How good would CP3 do if Blake didn't play for a year?

Lillard without LMA? If Davis or Bosh were out?

That's what Amar'e was back then. He was the scariest, baddest mother**ker in the league who at times would make you go "Shaq who?" Nash was able to have a career year with Amare unable to play. That's ****ing incredible.

If anyone can make a convincing argument that the 05/06 D Wade-led Heat would be worse off without Shaq than a Suns team without Nash, I'd love to hear it. When you lose a Barkley/Griffin level player and take your team into the playoffs in a brutal west.... you are the most valuable player to your team. That team quite frankly falls apart with no Nash and an injured Amare. Even just no Nash, that team is nothing. MVP is a regular season award, and Nash orchestrated an offense on par with a Stockton or Magic during the regular season.

Kobe got robbed in 05-06, not Shaq.

As far as Shaq in 04-05...I could see a case for it, but it's not as clear-cut robbery as Kobe not winning in 05-06.

Nash played for a coach with a system that focused entirely on offense and inflated everybody's numbers. There's also this half of basketball called "defense", which Nash and the Suns never played.

The MVP is kind of a joke anyway and more of a popularity contest. See: Nash's back-to-back MVPs, Rose winning MVP over LeBron, Karl Malone over Jordan because everyone was sick of Jordan winning every year, etc.
