You may want a laptop that has a 1080p screen, and at least 4 gigs of RAM.

If you don't mind spending a lot, go for a Mac. They have neat features for multitasking.

If you're cheap, go for a PC. There are plenty of places where you can find one. If you know your compy hardware, go to: http://www.xoticpc.com
They have good prices and you can make your own build.

You can shop around ebay or amazon for one too. You could get lucky and find a lappy that's cheap and good.

Lol if you want a Mac you should get about $1,500, take $600 of it, light it on fire, then use the rest and buy a Lenovo or something similar.

Historically, I have used 2 dell laptops. First one lasted nearly 3 years. Worked amazingly until it just simply got "old." Went to my university computer help and that's what the guy told me. He said I should be happy it lasted that long. Sadly it did crash when I needed it for a coding class so I couldn't even really study for that final since all the extensive programs I had was on the laptop. Eventually got a new laptop in enough time to cram for the final (backfired, I needed more time, oh well).

STAY away from Toshibas and HP, Toshibas are amazing laptops IMO but never last longer than 1.5 years from experience. Anyone in my family who had one had problems with it about half way through the second year. HPs last 1.5 years top and it isn't even that great of a computer IMO. Toshibas were by far my favorite laptop; however, it was susceptible to a very small life. Currently use a Dell in the mid price range and I'm good with it. I don't really game anymore besides counter strike. I barely can even handle that game but it's good enough for school work. Apple laptops are amazing but I never really got into Apple computers no matter how I tried.

no I didn't. My computer will run as good as the day I bought it for its entire life. I depend on my sh*t for business.

My office runs an old Windows 2000 server. You know how many ass-aches the people with Win 8 and Win 7 have with printing and using the shared drives?

I just connect and that's it. Plus i don't ever get malware, i don't gotta run any anti virus software whatsoever, and my OS is inherently more secure because OSX requires user permissions for just about everything.

I use PC and Mac for work, OSX is 100% superior. (unless you wanna play games.)

You still over-payed.

Macs are for graphical artists or people who need training wheels on their computer, but even the standard Mac-Malware narrative has shown to be a farce in recent years. You essentially pay more for less computing power, fewer software options, and the same security.

Excellent purchase!

You never know. You might be a part of a someones botnet at the very moment. At this technological point, you can never be safe from being exploited from hackers.

Get what you want.. mac or windows based is fine, don't get into the which is better if you're just using it for school and everyday use if you can afford a mac you'll be happy, if not there's a dozen other windows based laptops out there that are great too.. just make sure the programs you'd like to run are supported then go from there

we use both in my business, macs cost more but they last 3 times longer and don't slowly grind down to a halt..

we use dell at the track because they're tough and cheap the design software back at the shop is run on macs and the office is run on a old HP tower that we have kept alive with trips to frys, not much hp left in it...lol

My budget is 1k, but I don't think a mac would be good for my work stuff. Only for the person things.

Any brand preferences? HP, Dell, etc? I want something with good battery life, reliable and can run high quality movies with good speed (RAM)

I just bought this from Amazon, had the best specs/price value. Just search on Amazon you will find whatever you want.

I just got the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro Ultrabook and it is easily the best piece of technology I have ever owned. i7 processor, 8GB of Ram, the best screen resolution of any laptop (3200 by 1800) all for just $1,200. Amazing.

It's at the same time also a tablet that's portable and has tent and stand up mode.

A MacBook with the same specs and screen would cost upwards of $2600

Apple laptops are not overpriced once everything is considered. PC nerds are just hung up on specs to price ratio, but most PCs are cheaply made pieces of shit with nice hardware inside. Put one next to a Macbook and the quality difference speaks volumes.

OSX also runs much smoother than Windows on the same hardware, so the slight 'lack' in performance specs is usually a wash. Even if it isn't now, give Windows some time to bog down and that extra performance won't mean a thing.

That being said, of all laptops I've had I was the most pleased with my Dell Latitude. Dell's business line definitely shits all over their regular models.

my daughter has an Asus we got her last year for christmas... for the price it's been great, not the fanciest thing going but I think it was like 350 bucks...

one thing I noticed is cd/dvd drives are not a given on laptops anymore, if you need an optical drive for programs/games make sure it has one...

do the Surfaces had a cd/dvd drive? anyone know?

that surface 3 is more expensive than a macbook unless you buy the version with the shitty little 64gb hard hard drive

I have a MBA that I bought a few years ago used on Ebay for under $800. 13" i5, 4 gb of ram, 128 gb SSD, 13" screen. It's technically a 3 year old laptop but it's still running strong. Gonna replace the battery soon but that is a cheap $30 fix.

Never had any issues with it and I have gone through 4 different laptops in the span of 8 years with my ASUS netbook lasting the longest of all my PC laptops.

Never had much luck with Dell and HP but I would recommend Asus if you are going PC.

The Surface seem cool due to portability.

Dell laptops are great, I bought a Dell studio 5 years ago for around $800 and it still works fine. Dell customer support is very good too which is another perk.

It's not more expensive than a MacBook. Similar spec surface pro 3 is still cheaper than a macbook, but the surface pro 3 is touch screen. Huge difference

It doesn't have the DVD drive, but you can always use an external dvd player.

I haven't found the need to use my CD/DVD drive in years though tbh

Dell is okay and they have solid customer service. Their computers don't break down from my experience. But since I'm a gamer, I wouldn't want to use Dell for gaming. They tend to overprice their PCs and you can find a much better PC for cheaper else where. Sager is great since you can update the GPU for laptops (for some laptops), and I like their design better.

Anyhow, if you don't really plan on gaming, Dell and HPs are good for you.

For this is solid for Dell:
http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-15-7537/pd?oc=dncwb1808b&model_id=inspiron-15-7537

1080p screen, 15 inches. 8 gigs of RAM and a icore 7 up to 3.1 GHz. So, it'll run pretty fast and play high definition movies for you. You don't need to worry about RAM unless you are hardcore into video editing. There is no CD drive tho. This might be a problem if you like collecting physical copies. You can always buy a new external CD drive. Anyway, the laptop is $800. You can check out this video for it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2T_sHdv5wc

If you want to spend a little more, slightly over your budget, I would recommend the Lenovo Y50. It also don't have a CD drive, but it's powerful laptop. It also has 1080p. If you want to game a little, this laptop would do it for you since it has a pretty high mid tier gpu (GTX 860m). It can run current games on high settings. The price varies depending on where you go. You can find one around $900-$1100. You just have to search around. Here is a video on it:
