The projected cap is between 80-90 million when the new tv deal officially begins. A 1st year max contract(under 90 million cap) for the following examples of players would be
Less than 6 years of experience: 21.5mm/year
7-9 years of experience: 26mm/year
10+ years of experience: 30.5 mm/year
The Cavs will have a cap hold on on James and Love(assuming they re-sign) for 47.8 million, 130% of their previous salary. Let's say Kyrie Irving doesn't make the all star game and is not eligible for the Derrick Rose rule. He will be re-signed 2015 for 15.7 million. Some simple math shows that they would then have 26.5 million in cap room for a 90 million dollar cap, if that comes to fruition.
They could be able to sign any free agent that has been in the league for less than 10 years. And one of those free agents who would have exactly 9 years of experience at that time would be none other than Kevin Durant.
Additionally, I believe they could decline Waiters qualifying offer and still be able to re-sign him to a similar effect as what occurred with Houston and Parsons this summer.
The Thunder are another team that could some serious damage come 2016-17. They would have a cap hold on Durant of 27.6 million and already have Westbrook, Ibaka, and Adams locked up for the 2016-17 season at 33 million for the trio. That would given them 29.4 million in cap space.
Even more ludicrous, the Wizards have only 32.38 million in salary with Wall, Beal, Gortat, and Porter locked up. They could sign not 1, but 2 max free agents in 2016-17.
The impending 2016-17 free agency seems like it will make it very, very unfair for some teams.
