For instance sandwich bags. Most people would say "grab me a Ziploc bag", regardless of whether it's an actual Ziploc brand or not.

This doesn't make sense. Unless you're at a drive-thru or restaurant and don't know if they have either Pepsi or Coke, then in that case it's understood that you want one or the other because they're both the same thing.
In any other case, if I ask for a coke and someone hands me a grape soda or sprite...then that person is in the wrong. The opposite applies.

Here in Texas, some people use coke and soda interchangeably.
