Volleyball swat blocks are extremely extremly low-IQ to begin with... missing a volleyball swat block entirely means it's time to reconsider being an NBA player.

I mean, why would anyone hoist their arm back behind their head before attempting to deflect a shot!? JUST CONTEST THE SHOT STRAIGHT UP. It will not only increase your chances of blocking the ball (softly too, perhaps to a teammate), but it will also get in the line of sight of the defender reducing their chances of making the shot (a properly contested shot in the NBA is about 30% less likely to go in than an open look). You are also more likely to foul the player by swinging your arm at him like an idiot.

Amare and this play encapsulates everything I hated about 2000's era new-age big men (minus a few such as Duncan of course) and their attitude towards not wanting to be fundamentally sound and rejecting pivot moves for that MJ-esq face-up game. Dumb as a brick, depending solely on athleticism to get by, and lacking knowledge how best use their tools offensively and defensively. Now look at him.

Now look at him.Amar'e's attempt was so ridiculous that I am not sure it could or should be lumped in with anybody else during any era. He honestly looked like the decoy in volleyball who pretends to they're about the spike the ball but purposely whiffs so his teammate can hammer it home.

that was ridiculous. By going for a goaltend, he left bass wide open for an easy putback. What a pair of clownshoes this guy is.
