View Full Version : So, why was Lebron scared to participate in the Slam Dunk Competition?

A creative dunker (according to his fans) like him, why do you suppose he never participated? Was he afraid of failure?

Stans, let us know.

Speaking only regarding LeBron James, and not in comparison to anyone else, I always wondered about his dunking originality. He can complete many dunks beyond a mere one-hand tomahawk or one-footed windmill but he seems to more or less replicate dunks, as opposed to providing a unique style or re-imagination.

I think his high school dunk contest provided a sneak peek into James' possible contest issue. He jumped very high, and the goofy ESPN McDonald's high school commentators (they always are, not just with James) seemed to overreact due to the hype that'd been built prior, but they were relatively standard contest dunks. He was proficient at those jams but at the heart of things, it was nothing we hand't seen before.

Similarly, when I see James layup line dunks, they're all well done, but not particularly original or revolutionary, whether it be a bounce between-the-legs, a statue-of-liberty clockwise 360, or a windmill.

Either way, it still would have been interesting to see him compete, unless announcers and judges responded similarly to the McDonald's crew. If he earned a positive reception, that'd be incredible, but I would not have been as interested to see him do something pretty good but receive a champion's response.

Lebron can do any dunk you've seen in the Dunk contest probably outside outside of the newer generation (flight brothers type stuff) video game dunks people have been practicing the last couple of years unless he actually put time into it. I mean, check out the dunks that won Kobe a dunk contest back in 1997

Looked like he balled out / tried in alot of those Cavs Playoff series'...

Also, if that would be true, why would he go to a Team that just missed the Playoffs 4 straight times without him, and had the league's worst record during that combined 4-year span without him... (After he carried them to TWO 1st seeds before that)

but can he do it ^^^^^^^ ON CALL with no adrenaline or chasing defender to help his big butt generate momentum and to save him the time of having to think about the pressure?

guess we will never know..

and in reality, lebron is diametrically opposed to the core essence of the contest - the essence of the contest is to PROVE you are the best... it's just not lebron's style to want to PROVE he's the best.

he must have the best talent given to him every year.

he'd rather slide by with inflated PER's and TS% based on shot-restrictions and making Bosh floor-spread.

so with the dunk contest..idk, the bar is set pretty high.... maybe he just can't **** it all the way back?... :confusedshrug:

none of those are the FT line dunk i was referring to, which is almost like the long jump in preparation - it can be hard to get up for it and generate the momentum on call.

I can't find the quote right now but lebron said he doesn't consider himself a "contest dunker". If you watch his warmup line dunks, you'll see that can do basically any of dunks that have won NBA dunk contests. He would probably lose the modern prop, influenced contests unless he was actually putting in time to come up with something never seen before.

Lebron is not a slam dunk contest dunker. He gets really high but he has no flair or acrobatics to put on a show. Look at the HS dunk contest he was in for an example. To be honest there is really no player in the NBA who excites me like those AND1 Guys you see on youtube like Kenny Dobbs, Johnathan Clark, Kwame Alexander etc.

ajnapoleon
10-13-2014, 12:02 AM
I never understood why some wanted to see him in a dunk contest but in the same breath say he can't do anything besides the tomahawk?..........He says he not a contest dunker ....what more do you want?

Timmy D for MVP
10-13-2014, 12:18 AM
Well previous years he would have been great to see. He dunks with such power and gets so much air. But his dunks aren't super crazy as dunks. They are crazy athletically. I think this year would be a bad time for him to do it if LaVine and Wiggins and those guys get in.

That said I think it's important for the competition to get some star power in. Like... do something. It's not just Lebron. All of the stars pass on the competition.
