I remember it being bad that the Spurs & Mavs had to play in the second round, but I forgot the 4-seeded Mavs finished 16 games better than the 3-seeded Nuggets (the same record as the 8th-seeded Kings!). Wow!
1 z - San Antonio 63 19 .768
2 y - Phoenix 54 28 .659
3 y - Denver 44 38 .537
4 x - Dallas 60 22 .732
5 x - Memphis 49 33 .598
6 x - LA Clippers 47 35 .573
7 x - LA Lakers 45 37 .549
8 x - Sacramento 44 38 .537

Yea West was pretty weak outside of Mavs/Spurs/Suns from 2005-2007, 100% serious..
Imagine if we had that LEGENDARY Mavericks/Spurs series in the WCF and not the WCSF.... Would have made it the GOAT series IMO if it turns out exactly the same...
Dirk and-one to deny the Spurs and Duncan their finals ticket in the dying seconds of game 7......

Denver won their division with 44-38 and automatically got the 3 seed. In fact, they went 1-3 in their H2H with the Kings, so if there wasn't a rule that the division winner automatically got a top-3 seed, the Nuggets would have missed the playoffs!

That led to the rule change where winning your division only guarantees you a top 4 spot. Not a top 3.

I thjnk the logic was that if they did that , divisions become meaningless.

That is how it used to be. They wanted to artificially make divisions more important in the early 2000's so the introduced the rule.
It was stupid, so they changed it in a couple of years to Guarantee a top 4 seed with division win, but that's it. No home court if the lower seed has a better record.

I always wondered why the NBA did things this way.
Have everyone play everyone else twice, one home, one away, and have overall standings. Adjust games per season. Profit.

I remember the Clipps tanking a few games so they can have HCA against a weeker Nuggets team instead of playing a powerhouse Mavs team with no HCA.
