I honestly never understood why he's so loved by some.

Mediocre lyricist but skilled at selling hooks.

He's in the all-time list just not at all at the top.

I wish him and Mos Def could have had a rap battle in their primes.

He's ruined his legacy. Used to be very good, but sucks now.

Does it bother anyone else that Drake and Lil Wayne are also top dawgs in today's hip hop/rap game?

Yes.

Jay knows/knew how to create a good song like few other rappers. Too many talented MCs waste their careers by making boring music.

No because Drake is a good rapper who makes good music and Lil Wayne has put the work in. I'm not a fan of Lil Wayne but he's put out 11 albums, 19 mixtapes and 2 EPs since 1999.

Let me play some devil's advocate: Quantity over quality?

I like Drake kind of but his personality and public persona of being a fanboat nearly every year to different teams sickens me.

No, although his tenure has been pretty damn good

Not what I'm saying but Lil Wayne has put out some material that I, even as a non-fan, can appreciate. He's not putting out tonnes of crap. Not to mention rap is about numbers, and Lil Wayne knows better than most how to make a hit. Drake and Kanye are the only guys right now who do it better.

He's one of the most talented MCs ever but he's a lazy sellout. He even admitted as much. Whwn he thought the black album was going to be his last, he actually put in work. Last time he actually put his skills to use.

I really dig American Gangster & Magna Carta, except for a couple tracks that are junk.

Every rapper has some junk tracks lets be honest. Can't be spitting the realest sh*t all the time

I wouldn't put him in the stratosphere of nas, mos def, eminem, biggie, pac, and maybe on or two more people that I can't think of now.
He has a case over anyone else

Yes. He has the skills, accolades, wealth, fame, longevity, wife... A legitimate case for GOAT.

Could I name five rappers who are better lyrically? Sure. Maybe 10.

When people say Jay-Z is one of the best, they aren't talking about the Jay-Z of the last 10 years.

He'd be top 10 for sure. You have to take in what he's made like; R.D, Blueprint, Black Album. But also what he's done for the genre in general.

He's a legend but I don't think his stand a lone skills outshine most rappers of his peers. However, his impact outside of that is hard to ignore but how does one compare that to the impact of some of the pioneers of rap.???

His voice quality has always irked me. I could deal with it when his music was better. Now I don't particularly enjoy listening to him.

Respect to his career.

Jay-Z from 1996-2001 is one of the best of all time.

Every album is listenable, his flow is always strong and he knows how to construct a song, usually with a strong hook. Lyrically he's quite average, maybe slightly above.

I think his "downfall" is quite overstated. MCHG was a strong album. Watch the Throne is amazing too, even if Kanye is the driving force. American Gangster is overlooked. BP3 and Kingdom Come are pretty average, but they have good tracks(On to the next one, Good Lord, etc.)

Reasonable Doubt is a top 10 rap album of all time.

Literally everything else is mediocre and boring.
