I've had a second experience a few weeks ago, it was a scary dream on top of that. My eyes were awake, in the dream my girlfriend was telling me while I fell asleep on the phone with her that the doll next to me was cursing out loud. I was trying to force myself to move my head to see the doll next to me but I couldn't, my body was extremely heavy, my eyes were about 20% open and I tried shouting but it wouldn't come out. It sounded like my mouth was duck taped shut and I was screaming inside. It lasted for about 30-45 seconds and it really was scary. My first experience happened perhaps a few years ago, the second being the strongest.

Anyone ever had this? I hope it doesn't happen again or doesn't become a habit.

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which a person, either falling asleep or awakening, temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak or react. It is a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep characterized by complete muscle atonia (muscle weakness). It is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (such as an intruder in the room) to which one is unable to react due to paralysis, and physical experiences (such as strong current running through the upper body). One theory is that it results from disrupted REM sleep, which normally induces complete muscle atonia to prevent the sleeper from acting out his or her dreams. Sleep paralysis has been linked to disorders such as narcolepsy, migraines, anxiety disorders, and obstructive sleep apnea; however, it can also occur in isolation.[1][2]

Nope, i've heard of other peoples experiences, though. And it seems like it stems from stress and sleeping straight on your back. Don't want this happening to me so I sleep on my side or stomach err night.

This happened to me a few weeks ago, my arm fell numb and I was trying to yell but couldn't. Bad dream to say the least.

Strangely this might be true. I sleep on my stomach or sides never on my back but it happened while I was on my back. I'm never on my back..

I experienced it and it was literally the devil who appeared in this dreams. He was about 3 or 4 feet tall but powerful aura of horror and evilness. He had the horns, tail, forkpitch, chin hair and mustache. He looked like the archetype of Sinestro from Green Lantern comic books. His body was not flesh and blood but holographic or smoky in appearance.

He sat on my chest trying to possess me. I scream, kick, punch, but my body is pinned and I am helpless. Last time it happened was September 2011 and it was a knife he challenged me to. Me the mere mortal against an evil spirit like the devil? fuggetaboudit. Luckily I woke before it went too far. I thought I was really gonna die.

It used to happen once or twice a year every year since most of my life.

It hasn't happen since as others on this thread have mentioned. Avoid sleeping on your back and you are more than likely good.

Happened twice.

First time I was napping I panicked but obviously could do nothing, passed after about a minute.

It's happened maybe 3 times in my life. Not recently. From reading up on it, it seems to happen mostly when you sleep on your back. Everywhere for me it's happened that way. Every time I've had it happen I get the "intruder" feeling like another presence is in the room with you, then you start panicking with raised heart-rate and breathing. You're aware you're sleeping, but you can't wake up or open your eyes. Last time I had it I purposely made myself have erratic breathes to try to wake my wife up so she could wake me up.

I've also read this is a completely normal occurrence and can also help you not sleep walk becuase people who sleep walk

This has happened to me, crazy thing is that I woke up from a nightmare couldn't move a muscle for a minute and then fell asleep to the same nightmare. Shit was scary AF.

Damn, Draz, that sounds scary as hell. The closest I can get to that is me falling from top of a building. You wake up from it taking a 1 second huge deep breath as soon as you wake up, then you realize that it was just a dream.

Happened to me twice before but I don't recall hallucinations or dreams. Just in bed but can't get up or yell although I can see the room

Happened to me twice. It was weird because I'm pretty sure I was awake. Felt pressure coming down on my starting from my feet first. The room actually got darker and I couldn't move.. yet I could open my mouth to try to scream but no sound came out. After about 30 seconds or so the pressure lifted from my body and the room got brighter.

Scared the shit out of me.

Probably five or six years ago I had this happening to me at least once a week for about six months. I'd be concious, where I could hear, but couldn't open my eyes and couldn't move. I would start to roll, sort of throwing myself around in my bed. Banging up against the wall. It was a really terrible feeling. I have no idea what bought it on, and no idea why it stopped.

dont u think the sleep on your back theory is only because most of the time people are sleeping on their back?

anyways i for one think there is more to this than some mind trick, like some evil presence is making it all happen, but in the end using sleep as a cover to make it seem like its some mental thing. i only had it once but i'd swear there is more to it than just some half awake dreaming. just so out of the blue, nothing i can relate it happening to, and shit was so real and horrific

Used to happen to me regularly. Last time was maybe early 2013. I think the scariest one I ever experienced was of a dead girl clawing at me from under a couch. I tried getting away from dat dere bish, but I couldn't move.

This happened to me several times between the ages of 14-18. It's absolutely surreal to be able to seemingly look around your room, but not be able to rise or move no matter how much you will your body to do so.

I wonder if it's genetic , because my brother and a cousin, suffered a few episodes of this as well. In fact the only people I have known, who have experienced this are young men.

I always do crazy shit in my sleep. I used to share a room with my brother, so nearly every day he'd be telling me something I did or said in my sleep the night before. I remember my parents told me I walked into their room one night and told them the police were coming for me :lol Now that I sleep in my own room, I can't really tell if I'm doing strange stuff except for the nights when I wake up with the light on, with my socks on, or the cup of water I brought up laying on the side of the bed about to fall.

I've never experienced sleep paralysis though, and don't want to. It happens when the chemicals in your body keep you held down so you don't act out your dreams, so are us sleep-walkers safe from that? :oldlol:

At the risk of answering a rhetorical question....nope. I used to sleep walk a lot, and I still had a few episodes of sleep paralysis. But all my sleep weirdness stopped before I left high school.

It's really easy to wake up from sleep paralysis, just try to move your toes because it's the least paralyzed body part and you'll wake up.

I've also noticed this. We bought a house and moved in for about 9 years now. I've never once had a dream being physically in this current house. All of my dreams are taken place in old apartments I've lived in as a kid but with my present body and people I've recently met.

It might not mean much but it's a little weird. I also have the same exact dreams since I was younger once and a while.

I love when I wake up and try to remember the compilation of People I was with in that Dream and the Events of it.... Sometimes I realize its stuff I would love to happen in real life...

Also, alot of the times in reality those People don't even know each other, but are all pretty close in the Dream.

Study shows that we dream of people we've seen in real life whether it's personal or a glimpse of someone walking down the St, an encounter, etc.

it happened to me once, woke up and tried to move and scream but nothing happened I do remember feeling like there was something or someone in my room

its never happened to me again and I still sleep on my back, I personally blame drugs and alcohol because they completely screwed up my sleeping patterns and made me restless

Huh? Everyone here has experienced this?

Anyway, still, the timing of this thread and recent Events is ****ing SCARY...

I've never had close to an experience like this, but 2 days ago I was sleeping at a friend's house...

We watched The Matrix late, and as you know the Agents have this little bug, crawling animal, that they insect into neo's Body...

I wasn't scared or digusted much at all when we watched it.

Anyway, in the morning, like, right when waking up I'd say, I don't know, it felt like I had 2 of those disgusting animals in me (This shit actually happens, saw it on some discovery channel via YouTube), around the neck and face area... I don't know if it was an inability to move, or maybe just not wanting to move at the time, which makes no sense though.. I was a bit freaked out and wanted to check those areas by touching my Hands against them to see if anything's there... But I don't know, I didn't, I couldn't... ?
Like, approx 15 seconds later or so I rolled over, checked, everything was good, of course...

About nightmares in General, I don't have them at all, since like forever... Maybe since I was 12 or so.

But back then I learned that during a nightmare, you can just kind of push yourself up... Like give your Body a push or something, to wake up... I don't know if anyone told me this, or I read it... Don't remember. But someone telling me this is the most likely.

Anyway, you're probably thinking "Wait, I'm supposed to wake up during a nightmare to stop it? Well no shit, but its not that easy"

Well, I think I had about 2 nightmares since I knew this, and both times I like gave myself a bump to come out of the story/nightmare...

The 2nd time was kind of weird... A bit harder.

It's like my mind already knew this was possible, but I shortly struggled with it... Like if you do something you're afraid of doing, jumping from the 10 meter Tower in the Swimming pool, you need to convince yourself of doing it first... But finally I somehow bumped me out of the dream again. Woke up, then continued sleeping without any Problems... It's like your in the dream but your brain knows you can get out you just need to complete it.. I don't know, it's hard to explain but I hope you get it.

It's happened to me 4-5 times in my life. It's only scary until I realize I'm just dreaming, and I just wait for the sleep paralysis to pass.

Not too crazy. Sleep walking sounds terrifying, though. I also worry I'll give away all my life's secrets if I talk in my sleep.

Never had sleep walking done to me. I think that's pretty weird. How do people navigate without falling or breaking something?

I experience sleep paralysis almost everyday some years ago. There's a technique so that you can wake up immediately when you are under sleep paralysis. Try to move your toes instead of trying to get up. You'll easily wake up that way.
